News“Some police officers would pee on themselves at firing range yet chase promotions” – Muntaka

The Minister of Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has questioned the competence of some police officers in the Ghana Police Service.

According to Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, some police officers today would pee on themselves at firing range, yet such officers for still expecting regular promotions.

He noted that, existing arrangement allows officers to rise through the ranks without any demonstration of competence, skills, or commitment.

The Minister of Interior highlighted that hardworking officers often face unnecessary setbacks due to queries and disciplinary records.

Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on September 30, 2025, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak stated, “It is the one who goes to fetch water that breaks the pot. So, I don’t want any infraction, so I will fold my hands and just be lying down. And then four years count, I get promoted”.

You are the one who has been working very hard; sometimes you get queries and other things, because of that, you are lagging behind”, he lamented.

He further added, “I think that for us to have a very efficient service, whether police, immigration, fire, or prisons, it must be anchored on three things. One, the attitude of the service person. Two, the skills that you have.

“And three, the knowledge. And the skills can only be gotten only through periodic training. So, in my view, you should not just get promoted when you’ve not gone through certain…what we call regimental training”.

Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak continued, “I’m sorry to say, we have police officers today. If you take them to the police range for firing, madame chair, they will piss on themselves, yet they are walking around every four years, promote me, promote me,” he added.

“Someone comes as a Professional, then before you realise, he hasn’t done anything significant, before you realise he wants to be a COP, that is wrong, it does not happen anywhere. Because you are a professional, you have a level that you could go to. For you to become a professional Commissioner means that you can be an IGP, you should be an operational issues.

Some come with PR, then before you realise, they take the PR; he hasn’t gone anywhere; he hasn’t done anything significant tomorrow, she is COP, and once he’s COP, he starts knocking on politicians’ doors, saying, I want to be IGP. That is wrong. It doesn’t happen anywhere”, he stressed.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have reacted to the minister’s comments, saying, “It must be very hard to be a policeman nowadays, from mob attacks, to Bawku attacks and now the man under whose watch these incidents occur openly ridiculing their competence in such a humiliating manner. But hey, knowing the police, they won’t be outraged is business as usual”.

Another netizen wrote, “I doubt the minister will see this, but if he does, he should personally make Chief Inspector Mensah @ Sowutoum PS undergo training again. Checking license, road worthy & insurance of drivers who aren’t smiling at 1 am nd extorting money is wrong. Nd he shouldn’t wear slides too”.

Additionally a netizen wrote, “This is very disrespectful coming from the sector minister. You obviously can’t say the same about the military, even if it were to be true. In the midst of all the attacks on police, one who has thought that some leadership will not scandalise the police”.

One more netizen noted, “Provide funds for their training like the Ministry of Defence does for soldiers. Agencies under the interior ministry are woefully underfunded, and this affects their ability to train officers. Officers must go for training at Huhunya every two years, but it costs a lot of money”

“Most didn’t have the intention to become police officers, only because that was one of the easiest ways to get employed and earn a living with some protocols and some sort in this country”, another stated.
