The camp of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has fired shots at the former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over his idea that 41 per cent of the votes he got in the 2024 elections is awaiting him in the 2028 elections.
According to Kwasi Kwarteng Esq, spokesperson for the Ken Agyapong campaign, those remarks by Dr Bawumia are warped logic.
He emphasised that the idea of some 41 per cent of votes in waiting is flawed and illogical.
Kwasi Kwarteng noted that with that logic, the National Democratic Congress will also claim they have 56 per cent of the votes in waiting.
Ken Agyapong’s campaign spokesperson in a post on X shared, “The idea of some 41 per cent votes ‘in waiting’ is not only flawed but illogical.
By this same reasoning, the NDC could also claim 56 per cent ‘in waiting’”.
His reaction comes after Dr Bawumia called on the NPP delegates to vote for him to build on the 42% of valid votes cast for him and the NPP in the 2024 elections.
Speaking to thousands of NPP supporters after submitting his nomination forms for the NPP’s presidential primaries on August 28, 2025, Dr Bawumia stated, “I owe this party a duty, that if we are to win 2028, we ought not to start afresh from zero. Instead, we ought to build on the nearly 42% of valid votes and work to cross the 50% mark in the next election”.
“I’ve also had the privilege of serving as Vice President and supporting the President and government in our last administration with ideas that have significantly impacted the lives of millions of our people”, Dr Bawumia said.
“The NPP and Ghana are demanding a leader who embodies deep intellect, humility, respect for all persons, unity, courage, foresight, and resilience. As the NPP seeks a leader who represents the character of this party’s tradition and the values of our forebears, I, Mahamudu Bawumia, offer myself to lead the party into the 2028 elections,” he said.
Also, Kwasi Kwarteng launched a scathing attack on the former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to a statement issued by Kwasi Kwarteng Esq, spokesperson for the Ken Agyapong campaign on Thursday, August 28, Dr Bawumia is being projected as an establishment choice in the NPP’s upcoming presidential primaries.
Ken Agyapong camp boldly stated that under Dr Bawumia’s watch, the NPP recorded its worst results in history in the 2024 elections.
They further added that the official social media account of NPP only streaming Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s filing of nomination was a betrayal.
Parts of Kwasi Kwarteng’s statement read, “The use of the official party’s social media handles to stream only DMB’s nomination filing is a betrayal of the very unity our national leadership claims to preach”.
“Under his watch, we recorded the worst results in our party’s history: a 31% drop in national votes, a 16% decline in northern votes, a 33% fall in southern votes, and virtually no support from the Zongo communities,” he stated.
Kwarteng added, “At such a time, the priority should be rebuilding a stronger, united party to restore hope and confidence. Instead, leadership continues to impose the very candidate under whom we suffered these losses, shamelessly projecting him as the ‘establishment choice’ by giving him undue advantages and platforms.”
“If this continues, leadership should not be surprised when other candidates begin to take their destiny into their own hands. The grassroots will not be forced into silence while the future of the party is mortgaged for one individual. Never!”
Meanwhile, the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee has confirmed that five aspirants have completed and submitted their nomination forms.
The five include,
- Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong
- Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong
- Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong
- H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
- Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum
Also, the NPP will be holding their internal elections on Saturday, January 31, 2026, to select a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
