A video has gone viral of a Chinese man identified as Paul Chen, who was called to the Ghana Bar received met with a loud cheer..
In the viral video, after the Chinese man’s name was mentioned as Chi-Chon Chen, and was greeted with a loud cheer from the crowd. He was captured with a big smile on his face, receiving his certificate and posing for pictures.
According to reports, Paul Chen is a Kumasi-based businessman who decided to pursue legal education as an advantage.
The Chinese national receives his Call to the Bar Certificate of Enrollment from Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai.
He joined the 824 Lawyers-in-Waiting, being enrolled as Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Ghana.
Speaking to the media in an interview, Paul Chen stated, “ I was born in Taiwan, I came to Ghana when I was young, and I am currently doing business in Kumasi, and I thought being a lawyer is a very useful thing to do. Legal knowledge is a powerful tool, so it will help me with the business in Ghana.
When asked about his experience at the Ghana School of Law, he added, “It is very challenging, and I got a lot of help from the lecturers and the judges with whom I interned.
Without their help, it would have been a lot harder. I am very grateful that it has been a long journey”.
Some Ghanaians have reacted to the video, saying, “He said he is from Taiwan 🇹🇼. People from Taiwan do not call themselves Chinese. Respect that and stop making that mistake”.
“Galamseyers counsel that o. We are dead”, another stated.
“Smart guy. He will be an asset to Chinese galamsey gurus”, another netizen added.
One more netizen added, “He’s about to make millions from his fellow nationals in Ghana by representing them”
An X user also noted, “Ghanaians are more racist than the whites. You find a problem with him being called to the bar, yet there are Ghanaian lawyers in different countries across the world”.
Also, some familiar faces from Ghana’s media industry have officially joined the legal profession, namely, Serwaa Amihere with GHOne TV, Joseph Ackah-Blay with Media General, Benjamin Alpha, respected media personality, Keneritt Asah-Bediako, Emmanuel Ebo Hawkson, Daily Graphic’s court correspondent, and Sixtus Don-Ullo, a journalist with TV3.

In a social media post on X, Serwaa Amihere gave a little insight into her 5-year journey to being called to the bar.
She wrote, “40 subjects. 40 exams. Over 2,500 lecture-hours. More than 8,000 hours of private studies and group discussions. A thousand plus judicial decisions.
Several volumes of textbooks and monographs. Dozens of enactments, and many more dozens of pens, pencils, markers, highlighters, and sticky notes”.
Serwaa Amihere added, “Sleepy days and sleepless nights. This is the aspect of my life which I’ve carefully kept away from the public in the last 5 years.
Thanks to God, my beloved family and you, wonderful individuals, who supported me through it all To a new chapter”.
