Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, the former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, has suggested that Ghana consider the appointment of deputy MPs.
He highlighted that MPs have an intense workload from balancing legislative duties and constituency development in Ghana.
According to Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, the appointment of deputy members of parliament will ease the pressure on lawmakers.
The former NPP lawmaker is quoted by GHOne TV to have stated, “Perhaps we should consider appointing deputy MPs to ease the pressure on MPs.”
Additionally, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, a member of parliament of Chiana-Paga, has claimed an MPs work harder than anyone else in Ghana.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians on social media have cut the former NPP MP’s suggestion in shreds, saying, “Ewuradze! Deputy MPs and Deputy Ambassadors (when there are zillions of foreign service Professionals waiting for postings).
What will the political class not think of to make itself relevant (the only game in town)! For starters, scrap Article 78 of the 1992 Constitution. That should free up enough time for MPs to do what they were elected to do: represent the people and keep the Executive Branch honest! Constitutional Review Now!”.
Another Ghanaian wrote, “Could you explain the nature of the pressure? We don’t have a problem if you’re willing to cut your pay to your proposed deputy. But let’s be clear: as good citizens of Ghana, we will not allow another financial burden on the public purse”.
“If you will share your salary and allowance with the deputy dea cos we are not going to pay anyone a dime”, another netizen wrote.
One more netizen added, “Then what’s the sense in appointing MPs? MPs shouldn’t hold any ministerial position. There are a lot of candidates that can hold those positions, so why does the government continue to give more work to the ones that are already employed?”
However, one netizen backed the former lawmaker’s suggestion, saying, “I think this is a good call, but probably not to appoint politicians. I think that our chiefs can be used as a second parliament. Their exclusion from our governance system has created some form of inadequacy in our society. They must be made to be part of our governance structure”.
His comments come at a time when Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has threatened Members of Parliament who fail to attend sittings.
According to him, the Members of Parliament who fail to attend sittings risk losing their seats.
Speaker Babgin revealed, he received attendance reports of the first and second sittings in parliament, but decided not to publish in the hope of the attendance improving.
Addressing the House on Wednesday, Mr Bagbin stated, “It looks like that was a catastrophic mistake I made,” the Speaker said. “I should have brought it out and referred members to the Privileges Committee.”
“I have given directives to the clerks at the table to take the records for this meeting. We will be taking action to compel members to sit or to be considered to have vacated their seats,” Mr Bagbin stressed.
