Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the 3rd National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has clarified why the party’s executives were not present during the second arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the party executives were not available during Chairman Wontumi’s second arrest.

He explained that it was not deliberate but rather due to unavoidable circumstances, including travel and health reasons.

Alhaji Osman Masawudu claimed virtually all top officers, including the General Secretary, National Organiser, and several others, were unavailable.

Speaking in an interview shared on social media, Alhaji Masawudu explained, “NPP, for now, we are so united, and you know, for now our slogan is touch one touch all. The moment you touch one, you touch all, but sometimes there comes a circumstance where all of us may have a mission. We were out of the country.

As I’m talking to you myself, I was out of the country and I just came yesterday. So, most of us, especially the national officers, were not around.

It can’t happen that the Ashanti regional chairman will be arrested and the national officers will not appear there… I was not around, the national chairman is not well, and he was not around. Nana B was not around, and the General Secretary (too). So almost all of us were not around”, he said.

His remarks come following Moses Abor, an aspiring NPP National Organiser, who voiced his deep displeasure with the party’s leadership, criticising their perceived neglect of Chairman Wontumi during his ongoing legal battle.

According to Moses Abor, not a single executive has come to visit Chairman Wontumi since his arrest.

Speaking to the media, Moses Abor stated, “We want to thank everyone so far, and I believe God will speak today.  I can’t think far; I am struggling to understand what is happening with the leadership of the NPP.

How is it that a whole regional chairman has been facing a serious situation since Monday, and yet, up till now, not a single party executive has shown up to support him?”

He added, “I think there is something wrong because NPP is not like this; there are a lot of things that are going on in the NDC, but we are quiet.

What at all has Wontumi done? What he is being accused of there is no evidence of him being caught red-handed doing it, and everyone is neglecting him.

This is not about Wontumi but about the party, and I keep saying that no amount of intimidation can bring the NPP down. Thank you very much”.

Meanwhile, Wontumi has been released from police custody after three nights.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) released comes after he fulfilled bail conditions amounting to GH₵25 million imposed across two separate illegal mining cases.

Wontumi, on Tuesday, October 7, was granted a ₵25 million bail by the Criminal Division of the Accra High Court in connection with two separate cases relating to alleged illegal mining.

Wontumi’s next hearing is scheduled for October 28, 2025.
