Wontumi FM journalist granted GH₵100K bail after two weeks in custody

NewsWontumi FM journalist granted GH₵100K bail after two weeks in custody

Wontumi FM journalist Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare has been granted a GH₵100,000 bail after spending two weeks in police custody.

The court granted the Wontumi FM journalist bail of GH₵100,000 with two sureties.

Lawyer for Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare is currently working to complete his bail conditions.

The Wontumi FM journalist was granted bail after the court denied him bail on several occasions.

He is expected to return to court on September 1, 2025, as the case continues.

Judge Samuel Bright Acquah, who presided over the case, noted that although he had no reason to deny bail, he was guided by judicial precedent.

The Judge recalled a case involving a young man who insulted former President Akufo-Addo when he was in office and was remanded.

Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare was arrested on August 12 over allegations claiming President John Mahama had a hand in the GAF Z9 helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians.

Speaking in a viral video while being escorted back into custody, Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare stated, We are strong, we are still strong, the elephant is strong, I am strong, we are stronger than apartheid. I’m the hero”.

It was earlier reported that Akyemkwa Nana Kofi Asare was allegedly abducted by unknown armed men.

Reports suggest Akyemkwa Nana Kofi Asare was whisked away in a dramatic “Rambo-style” operation.

Eyewitnesses say the assailants, heavily armed, arrived in unmarked vehicles, firing warning shots all over, forcibly picked up the journalist, and sped off without revealing their identities or intentions.

Akyemkwa Nana Kofi Asare, after the tragic Helicopter crash on August 6, which claimed eight lives, boldly stated that President John Mahama could be held accountable for the accident.

Speaking on Wontumi TV, Akyemkwa Nana Kofi Asare stated, “Mahama should be held accountable; he is aware of everything. Asiedu Nketia should be asked why he said he would not attend the event but delegated responsibility to Samuel Sarpong.

The document was also given to Fiifi Kwetey to go, and he also refused, asking the NDC’s first vice, Samuel Sarpong, to attend instead.”

He further claimed, “Another instance, the plane was there, the delegates and protocols were on board, and Ato Forson pulled out Muntaka for a meeting, is it madness?

Eight people’s husbands, fathers, and you are telling us this nonsense to believe”.

Also, his lawyer Enoch Afoakwah had earlier lamented why he was still being kept in remand despite Ghana’s law on granting bail conditions.

According to lawyer Enoch Afoakwah, they cannot understand why the prosecution still insists on keeping the Wontumi FM presenter detained when investigations are done.

Speaking in an interview on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM, lawyer Enoch Afoakwah stated, “We cannot understand why the prosecution still insists on keeping him detained when they say investigations are done.

“Our concern is how the prosecution is handling this case, especially given that the law is clear on the conditions for granting bail,” the lawyer added.

“He pleaded not guilty, yet he continues to be remanded,” Afoakwah stressed.
