Fifi Kwetey, the NDC General Secretary, has explained the reasoning behind the party barring government appointees from holding party office.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, January 29, 2026, the General Secretary of the party explained that the decision is to try to reduce greed.

According to Fifi Kwetey, the NDC has millions of capable members who can serve in different portfolios agruing that there is no need for government appointees still holding positions at the party office.

Fifi Kwetey detailed, saying, “The NDC has so many people; our numbers are massive, millions of supporters, and we have so many people capable of holding positions. It cannot be a situation where only one or two are capable of holding both an appointed osition in government and position in the party, it just cannot be.

God forbid if any of us drop dead today the NDC has got so many people, who can hold our position, and do an excellent job if not even a better job. So we must have the same principle”.

He added, “It is an issue of reducing the level of greed. You alone, one man no chop; what’s your problem? If you want to work for the party, leave your position in government, come and contest and win, then we know you are fully dedicated.

This situation, where you are trying to be one leg here, one here there… even the constitutional review, it is bringing a provision that, if you are a member of parliament, it is no longer going to be permitted once it is approved for you to be in parliament and government at the same time, it is the same kind of principle.

His explanation follows the NDC barring all serving government appointees from contesting executive positions within the party.

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey explained that government appointees who wish to contest must resign from their appointments.

According to Fifi Kwetey, the decision forms part of measures ahead of the party’s reorganisation, which begins on January 30.

He added that a government appointee who intends to contest must resign at least six months before filing nomination forms.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, January 29, 2026, the General Secretary of the party, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey stated, “Any person contesting any position in the party who is holding an office to which he or she was appointed by the president, or the government shall resign at least six (6) clear months from the said office or appointment prior to the filing of the nomination forms for the party position he or she desires to contest,” he stated.

“Persons who are affected by the restrictions specified in paragraph (1) of this section shall include the following:

(a) Ministers and Deputy Ministers;

(b) Chief Executive Officers or Managing Directors and Deputy Chief Executive Officers or Deputy Managing Directors, or analogous officers;

(c) Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Administrative Units of the Government of Ghana,” he said.

He, however, clarified that board members are exempt from the directive.

“A person appointed as a chairperson or member of any Board, or any analogous position shall be exempt from the restrictions imposed by paragraph (1) of this section,” he added.

He added, “The NDC is a big party, and it cannot continue to have people holding positions in both the government and the party because it has enough qualified people”.
