An eight-year-old boy has died after falling into an abandoned manhole.
Reports suggest the incident happened at Blue Rose Estate in Buduburam, located in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.
The eight-year-old boy has been identified as Elijah Success Kaba.
The deceased and his cousin, Andrew Jallo, a 15-year-old, fell into the manhole while drawing water from it.
Andrew Jallo is now in critical condition.
The two were rushed to the St. Gregory Catholic Hospital by personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, but Elijah Success Kaba died while receiving treatment.
Speaking to Citi News, the Buduburam Fire Station Officer DO II Samuel Derry Moro stated, “We received a call while at the station about two children who had fallen. Within 10 minutes, we were on the scene. We rescued the 15-year-old, but despite our best efforts, we could not save the eight-year-old. We involved town elders to assist with the proper rites before continuing our rescue efforts.”
A Buduburam resident added, “We are appealing for this manhole to be relocated to higher ground, where water problems won’t occur. At the very least, it should be filled for now to prevent further accidents and save the lives of children in the community.”

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) noted that the fire was first reported at 00:02 hrs, with the Dansoman Fire Station arriving just two minutes later and found the fire at an advanced stage.
Eight fire engines from Industrial Area, Ministries, National Headquarters, Madina, Weija, Anyaa, and Accra City were mobilised to contain the inferno, with some support from private water tankers.
The information gathered is that the fire was confined by 01:51 hrs, brought under control at 03:03 hrs and was fully extinguished by 05:21 hrs.
Reports suggest the girl was caught in the fire and could not be rescued, with her body handed over to the Police for further investigation.
The Dansoman Market destroyed several wooden structures and shops, along with their contents.
