Francis Asenso Boakye, the Member of Parliament for Bantama and the former Roads and Highways Minister, has alleged that some New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters sponsored John Mahama to defeat Dr Bawumia in the 2024 election.
According to Francis Asenso‑Boakye, the NPP supporters, unhappy with Dr Bawumia leading the party as a flagbearer in the 2024 elections, sponsored John Mahama ahead of the December 2024 polls.
Speaking on Angel TV, Francis Asenso‑Boakye detailed, “Our contest to elect a flagbearer in 2023 was very divisive, with tension and all that; we even went as far as insulting each other. Even during our campaign, our own words were being used against us by the NDC.
Some of our own NPP people were actively working against our win in 2024, so it was difficult, including some who sponsored the then-opposition party against us. It was a difficult election”.
He continued, “It’s all because of how we conducted our primaries. I have gone to a primary, and I lost. In the NPP, after losing a we support whoever wins the election, but some people do not understand; they were sabotaging the one that won.
I am not talking about the presidential candidate; some individuals in our party supported some other aspirants for me. I had a call from a known activist of the NDC mentioning people who were coming to the then opposition leader. They were giving him money, which is sad. Today, some of these things are being brought up that Dr Bawumia did not perform well, so we should elect another candidate”.
Asenso-Boakye further emphasised that no matter the situation, he will support the NPP right or wrong, adding that he will support whoever emerges winner in the NPP presidential race on January 31, 2026.
“If you are an NPP party, no matter the situation, my party right or wrong, you have to support an NPP candidate. I am not supporting other candidate, but if they emerge victorious, I will work hard for whoever is selected”.
Meanwhile, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the NPP’s running mate in the 2024 elections, has admitted that the party’s defeat was partly due to a loss of trust between the government and the people.
According to Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, after ten months of political reflection, he has come to the realisation that the Akufo-Addo government simply did not listen enough.
He asserted that the government had broken the trust between citizens, which led to the NPP’s humiliating defeat.
Napo explained that the government had to navigate severe global economic and health crises, which affected many countries and, consequently, the financial stability and savings of the citizens.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh stated, “One thing I’ve concluded in the last 10 months is that there was a broken trust between citizens to government. The trust that was broken hurt so much so that we saw the results so broken”.
“We didn’t listen enough, we assumed a lot of things we shouldn’t have assumed,” he admitted.
He added, “We had gone through the worst global economic climate, medically and economically or health-wise. A container from China that cost $1200 logistic-wise had risen to $14,000. People’s lifetime savings have been wiped out”
“People had died in their droves that had never been seen before, without a military crisis or World War. So a lot of things that happened.”
Napo stressed that the NPP’s biggest failure was not hearing the public early enough, and the failure paved the way for everything that followed.
