Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, has shared more details regarding former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, pending US court appearance.

Speaking in an interview on Starr FM, Dr Ayine reiterated that his office is not investigating Ken Ofori-Atta in the SML scandal.

He, however, added that his office is currently investigating Ken Ofori-Atta over several other cases, including transactions and activities during his tenure as Minister of Finance.

According to AG Ayine, the Ken Ofori-Atta case at the US court is more serious than he thought, adding that Ghanaians will know what the US judge decides regarding his immigration status on January 20.

Dr Dominic Ayine stated, “The possibility is very high, and he could either self-deport or face deportation by the immigration judge on January 20. So after the hearing, we will get to know what the judge decides regarding his immigration status. But it’s more serious than I thought,” he said.

“I also mentioned that there are other investigations ongoing. So it is not only the SML investigation, which has been conducted by the OSP, that may lead to issues of accountability or alleged criminality. There are other investigations that I am undertaking, which will be announced at the appropriate time,” he added.

Also, the Attorney General revealed that Ken Ofori-Atta authorised all National Cathedral payments.

According to Dr Dominic Ayine, Ken Ofori-Atta authorised all National Cathedral payments, including the $47 million paid to internationally acclaimed architect and designer David Adjaye.

The Attorney General made this known while speaking to Bola Ray on StarrChat.

He was quoted as saying, “All National Cathedral payments, including the $47 million paid to the architect, were authorised by Ken Ofori-Atta”.

Meanwhile, the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has described  Ken Ofori-Atta as an illegal alien.

According to an ICE spokesperson, Ken Ofori-Atta is facing corruption and corruption-related charges in his home country.

ICE detailed that Ken Ofori-Atta entered the United States on May 28, 2025, on a visitor’s visa with an expiration date of November 27, 2025.

The ICE spokesperson responding to Tv3’s Joseph Ackah-Blay is quoted to have said, “Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta is an illegal alien from Ghana who is facing corruption and corruption-related charges in his home country. He entered the United States on May 28, 2025, on a visitor’s visa with an expiration date of November 27, 2025. Ofori-Atta overstayed his permitted admission”.

“He has been issued a notice to appear and will remain in ICE custody. He will be given due process before a Justice Department immigration judge,” the spokesperson said.

“The Trump administration has been abundantly clear: aliens must respect our laws or face the consequences. Overstaying a visa is an immigration law violation that can result in deportation,” he added.
