Dr Arthur Kennedy, a veteran politician and founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said former president Nana Addo is a liability to the party.
According to Dr Arthur Kennedy, the earlier he takes a back seat, the better for the NPP.
He highlighted that Nana Addo caused the division in the New Patriotic Party when he forced Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on the party as the 2024 presidential flagbearer.
Dr Arthur Kennedy stressed that Nana Addo is the leader who has divided the party more than any leader in recent years.
Speaking on TV3’s Agenda programme, Arthur Kennedy stated, “His conduct is inconsistent with the points he made, he was the person who divided the party and tied it hand behind it back and force Dr Bawumia on the party at that time he could have preached unity but he did not he was the person who refused to sack Ken Ofori-Atta who is now an albatross around the neck of the party.
He was the one who told voters in the Ashanti Region that their thumb is their own and they could do whatever they want with it. Nana Addo is a liability to the party; the earlier he takes a back seat, the better for the NPP. As long as we don’t know that we will suffer.
Nana Addo is a liability, is a very big liabilty the earlier he takes a back seat, the better for the NPP and not only that his words are inconsistent with his actions. He has divided the party more than any other leader in our recent history, so he cannot preach unity and be taken seriously.
His comments follow Akufo-Addo warning all the aspirants that the NPP is bigger than any individual during the party’s peace pact.
“The ideology of the NPP remains attractive to Ghanaians. The NPP is bigger than any individual…unity is not an option, a strategic necessity to victory,” he said.
Some Ghanaian reacting to Dr Arthur Kennedy’s remarks stated, “Everything this man says is a broken record, can you fetch him a glass of water and find a seat for him at the back?? Others, too, want the microphone…”.
“Thank you, sir. Call a spade a spade, not a big spoon. He forced Bawumia on the people so that he and his family can keep ruling Ghana from the shadows. I’m glad Ghanaians saw this voted against Bawumia”, another Ghanaian added.
One more X user added, “He spoke the hard truth, but some people will see it otherwise… He is a complete electoral liability to his party”.
Meanwhile, Dr Arthur Kennedy had earlier called on the NPP to sanction former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Arthur Kennedy noted that if the NPP are in the mood to discipline, then Akufo-Addo should be sanctioned for the government he led.
Dr Kennedy criticised disciplinary decisions within the party, describing them as selective and lacking due process.
He recounted earlier actions against former party executives Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong adding that they were unjustified and politically motivated.
Dr Kennedy asserted that the fallout from those decisions continues to undermine the party’s cohesion and credibility.
He highlighted that for discipline to be meaningful, it must be applied fairly and without bias across all levels of leadership arguing that the NPP cannot credibly enforce discipline among its members while ignoring the Akufo-Addo administration poor governance.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Big Issue, Arthur Kennedy stated, “Those filings were not done with due process; they were cooked and manufactured. Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong had done nothing wrong. Their expulsions were vindictive and non-principled, and that is the price we are still paying.
“If we are going to discipline people, then we should discipline people left, right and centre. I want to suggest that if we are in the mood to discipline, then by now we should be calling Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the carpet for the government he led, no cabinet reshuffle, corruption and arrogance everywhere,” he said.
