Dr Arthur Kennedy, a veteran politician and founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has begged Ghanaians to give the former vice president and NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia a chance to become president of Ghana.
According to Arthur Kennedy, a vice President and a Presidential candidate are normally different people.
He cited instances where Vice Presidents who got opportunities to be Presidents turned out to be effective, naming Anwar Sadat and Richard Nixon.
Speaking on Joy News on February 2, 2026, Dr Arthur Kennedy explained, “We should all give Dr Mahamudu Bawumia a chance because a vice President and a Presidential candidate are normally different people”.
“Anwar Sadat was said to be cowardly as Nasser’s vice, but he turned out to be a very effective President in his own right”, he said.
“Richard Nixon was not a very impressive Vice President to Dwight Eisenhower, but he did an excellent job as President, until Watergate”.
However, an elderly man has quizzed what Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is coming back to do after emerging victorious in the party’s primaries.
He questioned whether the dollar, now trading at about 10 cedis, would be pushed to 17 cedis, and whether petrol, currently around 9 cedis, would rise to the same level.
According to him, Ghana does not need to go backwards.
Speaking in a viral video, the elderly man stated, “This issue is disturbing me. Now that Bawumia has won, what is he coming to do? I am not worried about his win, dollar is now 10 cedis, is he coming to move it to 17 cedis? Ghana, are we going to go backwards? How much is cement now? 70 cedis is he coming to send it back, 102 cedis or what?
Look at the price of petrol, how much is one litre, it is 9 cedis, is he coming to send it 22 cedis?”, he questioned.
In related news, Dr Arthur Kennedy has said former president Nana Addo is a liability to the party.
According to Dr Arthur Kennedy, the earlier he takes a back seat, the better for the NPP.
He highlighted that Nana Addo caused the division in the New Patriotic Party when he forced Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on the party as the 2024 presidential flagbearer.
Dr Arthur Kennedy stressed that Nana Addo is the leader who has divided the party more than any leader in recent years.
Speaking on TV3’s Agenda programme, Arthur Kennedy stated, “His conduct is inconsistent with the points he made, he was the person who divided the party and tied it hand behind it back and force Dr Bawumia on the party at that time he could have preached unity but he did not he was the person who refused to sack Ken Ofori-Atta who is now an albatross around the neck of the party.
He was the one who told voters in the Ashanti Region that their thumb is their own and they could do whatever they want with it. Nana Addo is a liability to the party; the earlier he takes a back seat, the better for the NPP. As long as we don’t know that we will suffer.
Nana Addo is a liability, is a very big liabilty the earlier he takes a back seat, the better for the NPP and not only that his words are inconsistent with his actions. He has divided the party more than any other leader in our recent history, so he cannot preach unity and be taken seriously.
