Mahama orders NIB to probe Ofosu Nkansah’s alleged paid overseas scholarship claims

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to immediately investigate corruption allegations in the award of foreign scholarships.

The development follows, Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, a former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme on Sompa 106.5 FM, who alleged that an individual paid money to secure a scholarship to pursue studies abroad under this current NDC government.

Kofi Ofosu Nkansah during the discussion stated, “I know someone who bought an foreign scholarship under this current administration”.

According to the Presidency, the allegation by Kofi Ofosu Nkansah in the award of overseas scholarships is a matter of “grave public concern”.

Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the Minister in charge of Government Communications, highlighted that the discussion, conducted in Twi, has since gained wide public circulation and drawn the President’s attention.

He added that after reviewing the broadcast, President Mahama concluded that the allegation was serious and against the government’s commitment to transparency, integrity, and equal access to educational opportunities.

Felix Ofosu Kwakye revealed that President Mahama has formally directed the National Investigation Bureau to immediately investigate the allegation and to establish the factual basis of the claim.

The NIB are also to identify any persons involved, and determine the veracity of the allegations.

The directive was contained in a letter dated 3rd February 2026, signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President wiith some part saying, “The Bureau has also been directed to submit its findings to the President for consideration and any appropriate action that may arise”.

In related scholarship news, Reports suggest that the former Deputy Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Afua Gyasiwaa Gaisie, has been arrested at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

According to reports, Afua Gyasiwaa Gaisie was arrested by the National Intelligence Bureau officers moments after arriving at Kotoka International Airport.

Reports suggest her arrest is linked to investigations involving the activities of the Scholarship Secretariat under the previous administration.

The Ghana Chronicles in a post on X wrote, “Former Deputy Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Afua Gyasiwaa Gaisie, has been arrested by National Intelligence Bureau officers moments after arriving at Kotoka International Airport.

Her arrest is linked to ongoing investigations involving activities under the previous administration. She is currently assisting investigators with the inquiry. More updates to follow”.

Also, the  National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) months ago arrested six officials of the Scholarship Secretariat.

The six official arrests follow the ongoing audit into the institution’s operations.

Reports suggest the six were arrested and taken into custody some weeks ago and were later granted bail with further investigations pending.

Meanwhile, the NIB have yet to disclose details of the alleged offences or the specific findings that led to their arrest.

The arrest followed the alleged irregularities under the former leadership of the Secretariat.

The current Registrar, Alexander Asafo-Agyei, since assuming office, have been raising an alarm about the lack of accountability in the Secretariat’s previous administration.
