Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, has tackled legal practitioner Amanda Clinton following her comments regarding the arrest of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong.
Amanda Clinton, in an interview on JoyNews on May 13, 2026, argued that Interpol and other international security agencies did not share information with the Ghana government regarding the Asante Akyem North due to trust issues.
She disclosed that if the international law enforcement agencies trusted the Ghanaian government, there would have been an extradition process.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews Amanda Clinton stated, “It absolutely sends a signal to this government and to any future government that international law enforcement agencies perhaps did not trust the Ghanaian government enough to share information that they ordinarily should have shared. If there had been trust, we would have seen something like an extradition process.
“That is the concern from international agencies. The fact that they did not work in collaboration with the Ghanaian government to naturally expose this matter, and instead allowed him to board a flight after gathering all that information, rather than sharing it with the Ghanaian authorities for them to decide whether they agreed or whether they were going to extradite him, speaks volumes,” she said.
Amanda Clinton highlighted that the actions of Interpol and other international agencies raise serious questions about confidence in Ghana’s security institutions.
She added, “It says a lot about the ongoing conversation surrounding whether governments effectively deal with politically exposed persons and individuals in authority. If they fail to handle such matters effectively, then this is the kind of international embarrassment we will continue to face”.
However, the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament has said Amanda Clinton’s comments do not help the situation, describing it as unacceptable.
Reacting to her comments on JoyNews, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor stated, “I believe comments like that do not help the situation. Because, as a colleague lawyer, she should have conducted a little search within the security setup to ascertain whether, in fact, this matter was never brought to the attention of the security agencies and whether nothing was done about it.
“So, if you simply say they acted this way because they do not trust our security agencies, then that is most unacceptable. Comments like that should not be coming from highly regarded individuals whose opinions carry weight in this country,” he said.
Meanwhile, sources familiar with the arrest of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, have shared details concerning the arrest at the Schiphol Airport.
Reports suggest that the Asante Akyem North MP was dramatically arrested by Dutch security officials at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam shortly after a KLM flight from Accra landed in the Netherlands.
According to CitiNewsroom, “the lawmaker departed Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Saturday, May 9, aboard KLM Flight 590. The flight reportedly left Ghana through Gate C7 at about 10:10 p.m. and arrived at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam at approximately 4:36 GMT on Sunday”.
The information gathered from sources detailed that the incident happened moments after the aircraft touched down at Gate F3 when passengers were prepared to disembark, the pilot announced that all passengers should remain seated for what was described as a security check.
Sources revealed that a team of Dutch security officials subsequently boarded the aircraft and proceeded directly to the Business Class section where the Asante Akyem North MP was seated with another senior government official travelling on the same flight.
The Dutch security officials reportedly identified the MP, read him his rights, and placed him in handcuffs before escorting him off the aircraft into a waiting security van.
