The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has announced the suspension of all. active firearm licences in Ghana with immediate effect on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
According to the Interior Minister, the move follows Ghana’s sweeping overhaul of it firearms regulatory framework.
Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak disclosed that under the regime, all firearm holders will be required to reapply for their licences.
He disclosed that all firearm licence holders will now be required to undergo fresh mental health assessments, drug tests, and practical firearms handling training before their licences can be renewed.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, the minister stated, “Everybody in Ghana who currently holds a legitimate license to hold a gun, today (Tuesday, June 23), I am suspending all of it. All of it that everybody is holding”.
“Because we have realised a new phenomenon which is threatening public safety,” he noted.
Addressing a press briefing in Accra, the Minister for the Interior also disclosed plans to destroy more than 2,000 firearms that have either been voluntarily surrendered or seized under the national gun amnesty programme.
In related news, the Ministry of Interior had earlier suspended Kantanka Security Services Limited with immediate effect following Sunday’s shooting incident involving the Kantanka siblings.
According to the Interior Ministry, the private security organisation was found to be in violation of sections of the Police Service (Private Security Organisations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571), including the possession of firearms and unprescribed uniforms.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior read, “The Ministry of the Interior has, with immediate effect, suspended the Private Security Organisation (PSO) operating licence for Kantanka Security Services Limited following reports of alleged use of unprescribed uniform, possession and use of firearms and ammunition by personnel of the company in the course of providing private security services on Sunday, 21″ June. 2026, at Kwabenya in Accra.
The decision was taken after preliminary investigations indicated possible violations of the Police Service (Private Security Organisations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571) which govern the operation of Private Security Organisations in Ghana.
The usage of unprescribed uniforms, unauthorised possession and use of firearms and ammunition as well as security accoutrements by private security personnel, constitutes a serious breach with significant implications for public safety and security.
Consequently, the Ministry has directed the company to immediately cease all operations forthwith pending the conclusion of investigations into the matter.
All institutions are advised to refrain from conducting business with Kantanka Security Services Limited pending the conclusion of investigations and further directives from the Ministry,
The Ministry has further instructed the company to cooperate fully with the Ghana Police Service and to provide all necessary information to facilitate a thorough investigation,
The public is assured that the suspension is an administrative measure intended to safeguard public safety and security while investigations are ongoing. Appropriate action will be taken upon completion of the investigations and in accordance with the laws and regulations governing private security operations in Ghana.
The general public is further entreated to report any unlawful activities involving Private Security Organisations and their personnel to the nearest Police Station. Additionally, Private Security Organisations are reminded of the Public Notice on uniform compliance issued on 5th February 2026 by the Ghana Police Service and are strictly reminded to adhere to it.
The Ministry reiterates its commitment to ensuring strict compliance with all regulatory requirements by Private Security Organisations and will not hesitate to take the necessary action against any PSO found to be in breach of the law”.
