Waste in Ghana

A Ghanaian man living in the United States has fumed at Ghanaian leaders for failing to turn the country’s waste into huge sums of wealth.

According to the Ghanaian man, in the United States they have harnessed waste as an economic resource, but in Ghana our waste is killing citizens.

The US-based Ghanaian disclosed that he has been working at a landfill facility in the United States for more than 15 years, adding that landfills are used to convert waste into useful resources, including gas that powers some of the waste collection trucks.

Speaking in a viral video shared on X, the US-based Ghanaian stated, “Leaders of Ghana, look at all these trucks lined up here. They are waste collection trucks at a landfill in the US. Just a few days ago, floods claimed lives and destroyed properties in Ghana, partly because of poor waste disposal”.

“In the US, the government generates huge sums of money from waste. The gas used to power these trucks is produced from this landfill”, he added.

He further questioned what Ghanaian officials do during official visits abroad, saying, “When our leaders travel to the US for conferences, why don’t they learn how they have developed their waste management systems instead of importing excavators that end up being used for illegal mining?”.

The man also praised the strict operational standards at the landfill where he works, noting that waste collection vehicles are required to ensure no refuse is left on the roads during transportation.

“You will not see a truck leave behind trash that falls from it. If anything drops, they go back to pick it up and dispose of it properly,” he said.

“Here, where there are mountains or areas with a lot of sand, that is where we dump waste. The excavators being shipped to Ghana to mine gold are the same machines we use here for this job. When you travel to the States, don’t you see this?”

“Yesterday’s floods, which claimed lives and destroyed property, inspired me to make this video. I have worked in this industry for over 15 years, and I am concerned that our governments have failed to turn waste into wealth the way it is being done in the West”, he added.

The US-based Ghanaian remarks come on the heels of the devastating floods that hit parts of the Greater Accra Region on June 29, 2026, claiming several lives and destroying property.

Meanwhile, Linda Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, has shockingly claimed the region is fully prepared to handle any further heavy rainfall.

According to Linda Ocloo, the Greater Accra region is fully prepared to handle any further heavy rainfall, adding that a series of measures have been put in place following the devastating floods that hit the capital after the June 29 downpour.

Linda Ocloo disclosed that district assembly directors across the region have been tasked with educating the public on what to expect and the necessary precautions to take during future downpours.

She further disclosed that President Mahama has directed Municipal and District Chief Executives to intensify efforts to desilt and dredge gutters.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News, Linda Ocloo stated, “Oh yes, we are prepared. We’ve tasked all the directors of the district assemblies to educate people on what to expect and the actions to take during future downpours. So we are ever ready”.

“His Excellency the President has given his direction. A chunk of the MCEs and DCEs are desilting and dredging the gutters in their areas. The task force at their various places is trying to make sure that they take care of the debris”.

“There is also going to be a demolition exercise because we’ve earmarked some of the houses that we think need to be demolished so that we can make way for the easy flow of water when it rains. So we wouldn’t have such a disaster anymore,” she added.
