The Ashanti Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into allegations that a Chief Inspector stationed in the region owns unauthorised wooden structures at allegedly renting them out to commercial sex workers.
On July 10, in a statement issued, the Command revealed they are treating the allegations with seriousness and have initiated investigations to establish the facts surrounding the claims.
The statement was signed by Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
Reports suggest the Chief Inspector’s alleged activity was discovered when a special task force from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly stormed the area to demolish the illegal structures along the Subin stream behind the COCOBOD building in Adum.
Squatters occupying the shacks physically assaulted the team comprising soldiers and city guards, pelting them with stones, destroying two pickup trucks and an excavator being used for the demolition, with windscreens shattered and tyres deflated.
According to reports, three officers of the task force, including a soldier, sustained various degrees of injury.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has dropped a bombshell in his quest to rid Kumasi of sex workers.
The Kumasi Mayor revealed that some brothels used for prostitution in the Kumasi Metropolis are owned by some police officers.
According to the Kumasi Mayor, they have identified those police officers, and he has personally taken them to the Regional Police Command for investigation.
Speaking on Accra FM, the Kumasi Mayor stated, “It will interest you to know that some of the brothels are owned by Police Officers in uniform. The officers involved have been handed over to the Regional Command. We have identified them, and I personally took them to the Regional Police Commander”.
“It is a sad thing, but I have the support of His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei TuTu II, and all the people of Kumasi are behind me”.
In related news, the Kumasi Mayor has boldly declared that sex workers and migrant beggars won’t be tolerated in Kumasi.
According to the KMA boss, the Assembly is preparing to launch a major crackdown on sex workers operating in the city and also remove migrant beggars.
Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi expressed deep concern about the increasing visibility of sex workers and beggars, arguing that they are a threat to the image, security and social order of Kumasi.
Speaking on Nhyira FM, Mr Boadi stated, “The increasing presence of prostitution in Asafo, Ashtown, Ahodwo, Adum and other areas of the city is worrying”.
“Intelligence suggests that a significant number of those involved are non-Ghanaian, with some individuals allegedly trafficking them into the country for sex work,” he stated.
He added, “Such business is unacceptable and won’t be tolerated in Kumasi, the Garden City. We will take action to address the situation very soon”.
The KMA boss further disclosed that they are collaborating closely with the Ghana Immigration Service to identify and remove non-Ghanaian beggars from the streets.
“We’re working hand-in-hand with Ghana Immigration to remove migrant beggars from the streets of Kumasi,” he added.
