The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has blown an alarm on the opposition NPP standard operating procedure when facing a possible government arrest.
According to Asiedu Nketiah, the NPP members, when facing possible arrest for their alleged crimes, start to criticise the government just to prepare the minds of Ghanaians for when they are arrested.
He argued that after they are arrested, they start telling Ghanaians it is because they where critocosng goverthe; that was why they were arrested and not for any crime.
Asiedu Nketia also stressed that NPP members, after their arrest, always seem to claim they are unwell and end up at the hospital.
Speaking in an interview on Okay FM on August 5, 2026, Asiedu Nketiah stated, “The NPP members have drawn their own standard operating procedures for members facing possible government arrests for them to follow. The first thing is when you are suspected of a crime, start to criticise that government, saying all sorts of things, and when they arrest you, you will say it is because of the criticism that is why they arrested me.
You will realise that anyone who knows he or she is going to be arrested starts to talk anyhow, preparing people’s minds when he or she is arrested. So if someone knows that he has stolen money and gets to find out they will be arrested, then they start talking; just check all the people arrested by EOCO.
He added, “The next step is getting sick at once; you will remember when Wontumi was arrested, when he was granted bail, people were holding him up as if he could not walk; later he was in church dancing”.
Asiedu Nketia also recounted the arrest of Okatakyie Afrifa, who he noted was healthy and physically strong. He questioned how the NPP activist appeared weak and unable to walk shortly after being taken into custody.
He stated, “Recently, I saw Okatakyie Afrifa when he was arrested. We all saw it on television. When he was being escorted into the vehicle, he looked fit and healthy.
“The next day, when he was supposed to appear in court, all of a sudden he was wearing a neck brace and could not walk. How did he suddenly become sick?
“Does it mean the police assaulted him in the cells? If it had happened during the arrest, we would have seen it,” he said.
Meanwhile, the members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have taken to the streets of Accra to stage their “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration today, Thursday, August 6.
According to the NPP, their demonstration is aimed at defending civil liberties, the rule of law and democratic accountability following the attack on democracy under the current government.
Reports suggest the protest began its march from the Supreme Court, where they are expected to outline their concerns over recent judicial decisions and to present a petition.
The demonstrators will embark on a peaceful march through some principal streets of the capital before proceeding to the Jubilee House.
At the Presidency, the leadership of the NPP is expected to submit a second petition, urging President John Dramani Mahama to address what the party describes as increasing attacks on democratic institutions.
According to reports, the NPP protest has attracted support from other groups, including the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), which has thrown its weight behind the demonstration.
The NPP argued that their planned nationwide demonstration is over the Mahama government’s actions threatening Ghana’s democracy, constitutional order and the rule of law.
