Deputy Attorney General Dr Justice Srem-Sai has disclosed that two key prosecution witnesses in the case involving former Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, have been placed under police protection.
According to Dr Justice Srem-Sai, the two key witnesses were placed under protection following the death threats they received.
He revealed that the threats were intensified following Wontumi’s conviction, disclosing that two star witnesses and police investigators have all been subjected to threats.
Speaking on Joy News PM Express, Dr Justice Srem-Sai stated, “Our witnesses are every day threatened with death. The two-star witnesses and even the police investigators… they threaten everybody. But I think it comes with the job.”
The Deputy AG disclosed that he and members of his legal team have also received threats, with the threat increasing following Wontumi’s conviction.
“It’s actually gone up. Our witnesses are every day threatened with death”, he added.
“But I don’t think it’s important for us to because if you follow that, then it means people will use such threats to secure freedom to continue to do that which the law prevents.”
“My attorneys receive such threats every day, and not only in this case, but also in other cases, murder cases, armed robbery cases. Judges receive their share of the threats. It comes with the territory.”
He further added, “The point I’m making is that there is a limit to how much physical protection you can get, and even that is never enough because human beings can do so many things.”
“So I would, for my own peace of mind and everything, I discount the physical one, even though yes, it’s good, and just so I can sleep, I commit myself to the hands of the lord.”
The Deputy AG disclosed that the two witnesses have been given police protection when Justice Srem-Sai was asked directly about their safety.
“Yeah, we’ve given them police protection.”
Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi has filed an application at the High Court seeking to be released on bail pending the determination of his appeal against his conviction and prison sentence.
Wontumi’s legal team is asking the court to grant his release while the appeal challenging the judgment is heard.
The court is scheduled to hear the application on August 19, 2026. Wontumi is currently being held at Nsawam Medium Security Prison serving a 20-year jail term.
Lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, indicated that the application is in accordance with Section 96(1) of Act 30 and Section 33(1) of Act 459.
“Take Notice that this Honourable Court will be moved by Counsel for and on behalf of the 1st Appellant/Applicant (“Applicant”) herein praying the Court for an order that the Applicant, who is currently incarcerated at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, be admitted to bail pending appeal upon the grounds stated in the accompanying affidavit and for any further order(s) as this Honourable Court may deem meet,” parts of the application read.
“Court to be moved on Wednesday, 19TH day of August 2026 at 9 o’clock in the forenoon or so soon thereafter as Counsel for the 1st and 3rd Appellants may be heard.”
