In a post on X on Tuesday, August 18, the Police said the flyer was not issued or authorised by the Service.

According to the Police, they are working to identify those behind the publication.

However, they caution motorists and other road users against activities or devices that could distract them or affect their attention, hearing, vehicle control or awareness of surrounding traffic.

The Police statement issued on X read, “POLICE URGE PUBLIC TO DISREGARD FALSE FLYER ON USE OF AIRPODS AND EARPHONES WHILE DRIVING

The Ghana Police Service would like to urge the public to disregard a flyer circulating on social media, purporting to be a public safety announcement from the Service, and claiming, among other things, that the use of AirPods, earphones, or other audio devices while riding or driving is prohibited under the law.

The Service wishes to clarify that the flyer is not a communication of the Ghana Police Service. The Service has neither issued nor authorised the said publication; and our Cybercrime Unit is working on tracing those behind the false publication.

The Service, however, wishes to remind motorists and other road users that any activity or device that distracts them or compromises their attention, hearing, control of the vehicle or awareness of surrounding traffic can pose a serious risk to road safety.

Motorists and riders should therefore endeavour to avoid distractions and exercise maximum care while on the road.

The Service further urges all motorists, motorcyclists and other road users to familiarise themselves with and comply fully with the Road Traffic Regulations,

2026 (L.I. 2519) and all other applicable road traffic laws. Compliance with these regulations is essential to reducing road crashes and protecting lives. (A copy of the relevant provision is attached for ease of reference).

The Ghana Police Service entreats the public to rely on official Police communication channels for information on road traffic regulations and other public safety matters.

The Service remains committed to enforcing road traffic laws fairly and professionally while working with all stakeholders to promote safety on our roads”.

Some Ghanaians reacting to the development stated, “Inasmuch as that is a fake flyer as purported, I think it is a good call despite coming from a fake source. Most of these drivers are wasting human lives through this act”.
