Acting Rent Commissioner, Frederick Opoku has revealed that his office’s efforts to collaborate with state institutions to address Ghana’s rent-related challenges have largely been snubbed.
The acting Rent Commissioner disclosed that only the Ghana Immigration Service has responded positively.
According to Frederick Opoku, the situation reflects a broader problem where higher authorities have failed to prioritise and implement the appropriate policies needed to effectively tackle rent issues.
He disclosed that higher authorities have not given the necessary priority to developing and implementing policies required to address Ghana’s rent problems effectively, adding that the Bank of Ghana is one of the institutions that has consistently snubbed his office’s calls for engagement.
Speaking during an interview on Accra FM on September 1, 2026, Frederick Opoku stated, “When I took over, one of the areas I said rent control could assist the Bank of Ghana in addressing was the dollarisation of rent. I personally went to the BoG three months into office and spoke with them. I said, ‘I’m aware the governor has issued directives about dollarising rent, and rent control with the task force and the system want to work together collaboratively to see what we can do with our forces on the field.’”
“…At least ask them today — go and ask the Bank of Ghana, the financial market. Have they even responded to our letter or proposal after we wrote to them?”
He added, “I’m being frank with you. I did this to test the pulse of the institutions because I’m limited as rent control. Money to collaborate — but if the collaborator is not coming, in fact, the one who did well was Immigration.”
“They did well; I met the Director General and the Controller. I wanted to tell you the truth about what I’ve done behind the scenes. Very soon, when I’m going out, I’ll be going with Immigration. If all things are equal, we are okay with it,” he noted.
Some Ghanaians reacting to his remarks stated, “This man is one of the government officials who is actually doing his work. He just doesn’t wake up and go misusing government funds like others are doing. May Allah bless him abundantly”.
“This is why this country will keep retrogressing. The greed is too much. It’s evident most of those institution heads also own estates that will be affected by rent control’s measures. Too much greed”, a netizen added.
One X user added, “John Dumelo, who, during campaign time, said it’s going to be his priority but after assuming office, he’s busily sharing chop box and mattresses to his constituents. They don’t care about us, the citizens, but their stomachs. Spewing lies all over. God is our only hope”.
A netizen added, “Ghana has too many institutions whose biggest enemy is apparently another institution. Everybody is waiting for somebody else to cooperate while ordinary people continue paying the price”.
In other news, Frederick Opoku has urged Ghanaian Tertiary students to file formal applications for hostel fee assessments to trigger Rent Control Department action.
According to the Rent Control Commissioner, he has done enough in going across the country to ensure that hostel fees are reduced, adding that he will no longer personally visit facilities.
He explained that students must formally apply to the Rent Control Department for an assessment of their hostel fees, adding that the department has waived the application fee for students.
Frederick Opoku also noted frustration with students who only send direct messages complaining instead of following the legal process, stating that this does not help him assist them because he must work within the confines of the law.
He further revealed that the department plans to shift focus to commercial rental properties as part of broader efforts to regulate the rental space.
