Nicholas Duncan-Williams, the Presiding Archbishop and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, has said Ghana’s National Cathedral was not built, not because of corruption.
According to Duncan-Williams, the failure of the Akufo-Addo government to complete the National Cathedral project was because Christians failed to demonstrate the commitment required to see it through.
He argued that the stalled project was left uncompleted because of corruption but largely because Christians were not serious.
Speaking in a sermon to his congregation in a video shared on social media, Duncan-Williams stated, “The National Cathedral was not built, not because of corruption. I was right there. It was because we Christians are not serious”.
“We are a bunch of selfish, greedy people. It’s all about us. We don’t think about the kingdom,” he stated.
Archbishop Duncan Williams in the video questioned the level of commitment among Christians towards supporting projects that he said would benefit the church and future generations.
The man of God stressed that Christians must be more concerned about posterity and the advancement of the kingdom rather than focusing solely on their personal interests urged Christians to reflect on their contributions to the church before criticising others.
Duncan Williams, during his sermon, also criticised what he described as the unwillingness of some Christians to support people in need, mainly single mothers, widows and families struggling to pay school fees and rent.
In related news, Reverend Professor Paul Frimpong-Manso, a Ghanaian theologian and former General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, has recounted the criticisms directed at him and other clergy over the National Cathedral project.
According to Rev Frimpong-Manso, the criticisms directed at the clergy over the National Cathedral project were deeply unfair and truly painful.
He highlighted that his commitment has always been to the nation rather than to partisan politics.
Rev Frimpong-Manso further rejected allegations of financial misconduct, adding that opposition to the Cathedral should not translate into personal attacks on individuals.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Neat FM, Rev Prof Frimpong-Manso stated, “The reason I was deeply fed up is that when you are tagged as a sympathiser of a political party, it is truly painful, especially when you know you are only serving the country”.
“Some of us have really been through it. I love this country, and I have worked under various presidents, including the late Prof Mills”.
“I was out of the country when I received a call from former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo about the National Cathedral, but look at the insults I received from Ghanaians. Do you think that myself, Opoku Nyina, Palmer Buckle, Frimpong-MansoI and Prof. Martey, after all our hard work, it is the National Cathedral that will feed us?” he asked.
He added, “You can say you don’t like the idea of the Cathedral; a lot of people did not understand the vision, because of politics, but that does not give you the warrant to accuse me of spending money related to its construction”.
“This is so painful, and I leave all those who accused me to God. God will forgive them. That is all I will say, because if I do not pray for forgiveness for them, they will pay dearly with their lives”.
“What is a Cathedral? Do you know the works I have done? God should forgive them,” he reiterated.
