The Acting Commissioner of the Rent Control Department, Frederick Opoku, has called out the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, raising concerns over what he describes as severe underfunding of the Department.
Frederick Opoku warned that its operations across the country are being hampered by inadequate financial resources.
The Rent Control Boss fumed, arguing that the Rent Control Department plays a critical role in addressing housing-related concerns and protecting the interests of tenants and landlords but is underfunded.
Frederick Opoku further disclosed that Rent Control funding for an entire year is GH¢120,000 for the entire country, a situation he said was insufficient to support the Department’s operations.
He appealed to the Finance Minister to review the Department’s allocation and provide adequate resources to enable it to operate effectively.
Speaking on Adom FM, Frederick Opoku questioned how the Department is expected to effectively discharge its mandate with such inadequate funding, saying, “Can you imagine, how do I sit in Rent Control and you come and give me quarter funding of GHC60,000 for sixty-six offices? Let’s be frank, GH¢60,000 to run Rent Control for three months? What’s the meaning of this? The Finance Minister and all of them should listen to this and act on it”.
This is the heart of the people, so you cannot be putting money in other places where you do not care where your people sleep. You give me first quarter, second quarter, third quarter GH¢120,000 for the whole year. How do you expect rent control to function?”
Some netizens reacting to the Rent Control Commissioner’s remarks stated, “This man is a joke. He should be removed to a place where he can vacate his brain without consequences. The second quarter of this year has been sorry for all state institutions drawing from GOG, RCCs and ministries, including. But we ain’t ranting”.
“So how was he able to tour the entire country with his staff and paying allowances, hotel accommodation and fueling of vehicles? Out of the same GHS60,000 per quarter?”, a netizen added.
One X user added, “You will be surprised how much some MDAs receive. Yet, they are expected to give off their best. Most people go to work, and they are idle because there is basically no money to undertake activities. A good number of MDAs, especially the Ms, don’t have toners for printing”.
“For a government appointee to speak like this on radio is serious. GH₵60,000 for 66 offices for 3months? Meanwhile, rent control is one of the biggest issues in this country, especially in Accra”, a netizen added.
An X user wrote, “The Mahama govt is refusing to spend or pay its financial obligations simply because they want to squeeze liquidity out of the system so that there will be few cedis chasing more foreign currency and claim Cedi is strong.
Side effect is that people are really suffering in Ghana”.
“It’s good this man is letting things out. We can now conclude that the government has turned a blind eye to this sector and that we shouldn’t blame the rent commissioner or the rent control that they are not functioning.
The big men themselves want to invade rent tax”, one last X user added.
A netizen calculated, “Let’s do some calculations here……
60,000÷66 offices = approximately GH 910 per office and that amount, as he says, is for a period of 3 months.
