Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has questioned the Ghana Police Service’s justification for keeping senior nursing officer Salomey Awity Baffoe in custody.
Lawyer Kpebu argued that investigators can examine her phone without detaining her for two weeks.
According to Lawyer Kpebu, based on his experience as a lawyer, there was not sufficient justification for the Adenta Circuit Court 1’s decision to remand the nurse as investigations continue into her alleged links to the Ghana Jollof TikTok account.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, September 17, Lawyer Kpebu stated, “Based on my experience as a lawyer, from what I read, I don’t think this woman should be in custody. I don’t think so”.
Lawyer Kpebu argued that if investigators believe material linked to the Ghana Jollof account was shared through Baffoe’s phone, they could examine the device without keeping her in custody.
“The phone is seized. Then police will come back for an order to go and search the phone, etc. But not the person in custody,” he said.
“Her phones are what you need. You don’t need a person in custody,” he said.
Lawyer Kpebu admitted that the Police must continue their investigations but maintained that detention was not necessary to achieve that objective.
“By all means, police should investigate, but I don’t think remand was necessary,” he said.
Lawyer Kpebu’s comment follows Salomey Awity Baffoe, who has been remanded for two weeks by the Adenta Circuit Court 1 over allegations that she is linked to a TikTok account identified as Ghana Jollof, which has been critical of government officials.
The Adenta Circuit Court 1 decision follows the nurse’s arrest in connection with investigations into individuals allegedly linked to the social media account.
Speaking to the media, her lawyer and MP for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, questioned the basis for her continued detention.
He argued that authorities had told the court that the person behind the Ghana Jollof account is currently in the United Kingdom.
“Because you want to arrest Ghana Jollof, you have remanded her for two weeks. Meanwhile, you told the court that Ghana Jollof is in the UK,” he said.
The development follows the arrest of Salomey, a nurse based in Techiman in the Bono East Region, who was reportedly arrested during a midnight operation at her residence in Hansua.
The incident reportedly occurred between 11 p.m. and midnight on Sunday, September 13, 2026.
According to Salomey’s brother, who was present, three individuals, comprising two men and a woman, arrived at the residence at about 11:30 p.m. dressed in black uniforms, believed to be from National Security.
The family described the allegation as a case of mistaken identity and insists that Salomey has no association with the anonymous account.
Earlier, the legal representative for 40-year-old nurse and a mother of three, Salomey Baffoe, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, explained that his client was arrested over claims she operates the TikTok account, ‘Ghana Jollof ’, allegedly plotting a coup against Mahama.
According to the Lawyer, the brief facts the authorities presented before the court were that Salomey had conspired with an anonymous social media account known as “Ghana Jollof” to plan a coup to oust President John Mahama from office.
According to Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the security authorities told the judge that Salomey had links to the anonymous TikTok account.
The “Ghana Jollof” account in recent months attracted attention for its strong criticism of President Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.
The lawyer noted that the allegation formed the basis for the authorities’ decision to continue holding Salomey in custody while investigations proceed.
He, however, insisted that the nurse, who serves her community and country, is being falsely accused.
