A video has surfaced of the Bono Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority storming several hotels in Sunyani for allegedly operating without the required licence.
In the viral video, the Director led officials to the facility, revealing that the lodge had been operating without the documents required to run a tourism-related business.
The Tourism Director described the facility as a place where people mainly go to have sexual encounters.
The Director disclosed that the facilities did not have the required documents despite several attempts by officials to get the operators to produce them.
Speaking in the viral video, he stated, “This is not a proper hotel. This is an ashawo hotel. It’s called a brothel. We don’t call them hotels. We call them brothels, where people only just come to sleep with women”.
“I’m working for the government, and that’s where I pick my salary. If the government asks me to work, I’ll do it. So, the government said I should close it down. I have closed it down. This time, we have to process you for court,” he added.
“Lock the house… she is an NPP women organiser. Anytime we come here, she will engage us in plenty of talk since the NPP era. Look at the unit. For a very long time, you have been operating. If you don’t have a document… get a police report, get a fire report. These are documents we need,” he ordered.
Also, the Director during the operation found some young women lodging there, including used condoms scattered around.
Meanwhile, the facility owner had claimed that there were no occupants; however, officials found belongings of people in some of the rooms.
In other news, the Acting Commissioner of the Rent Control Department, Frederick Opoku, has called out the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, raising concerns over what he describes as severe underfunding of the Department.
Frederick Opoku warned that its operations across the country are being hampered by inadequate financial resources.
The Rent Control Boss fumed, arguing that the Rent Control Department plays a critical role in addressing housing-related concerns and protecting the interests of tenants and landlords but is underfunded.
Frederick Opoku further disclosed that Rent Control funding for an entire year is GH¢120,000 for the entire country, a situation he said was insufficient to support the Department’s operations.
He appealed to the Finance Minister to review the Department’s allocation and provide adequate resources to enable it to operate effectively.
Speaking on Adom FM, Frederick Opoku questioned how the Department is expected to effectively discharge its mandate with such inadequate funding, saying, “Can you imagine, how do I sit in Rent Control and you come and give me quarter funding of GHC60,000 for sixty-six offices? Let’s be frank, GH¢60,000 to run Rent Control for three months? What’s the meaning of this? The Finance Minister and all of them should listen to this and act on it”.
This is the heart of the people, so you cannot be putting money in other places where you do not care where your people sleep. You give me first quarter, second quarter, third quarter GH¢120,000 for the whole year. How do you expect rent control to function?”
