The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has rejected claims by Dennis Miracles Aboagye on TV3’s Daily Brief and Joy FM’s Newsnite programmes on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, that vessels operating in Ghana’s waters are not being monitored.
The GMA says its vessel monitoring system is fully operational and that it maintains 24-hour surveillance of Ghana’s maritime domain.
The GMA described the claims by Dennis Miracles Aboagye as false and misleading.
According to the GMA, its maritime domain awareness tools remain in use to continuously monitor vessels within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction.
They further disclosed that its surveillance system also supports the monitoring and protection of offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines and submarine cables.
GMA stressed that it uses standard operating procedures to track vessels and verify their identities and compliance.
They further urged the public to disregard the claims, adding that the public should rely on official communications from the Authority regarding vessel monitoring and maritime surveillance.
In a statement, the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) stated, “The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has taken note of statements made by Mr Dennis Miracle Aboagye on TV3’s Daily Brief and Joy FM’s Newsnite programmes on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, claiming that the Authority’s vessel monitoring system is ineffective and that vessels sailing within Ghana’s waters are not monitored by the Authority,
The GMA categorically refutes these claims. They are false, misleading, and do not reflect the operational reality of maritime surveillance in Ghana. The Authority’s surveillance system for monitoring vessels within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction is operational.
The Authority continues to use its maritime domain awareness tools to monitor vessels and maintains 24-hour surveillance and monitoring of vessels in Ghana’s maritime domain. The system is also used for monitoring and protecting offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines and submarine cables.
The GMA uses standard operating procedures to track vessels, verify identity and compliance, and support safety, security, and environmental protection within Ghana’s maritime domain. The suggestion that vessels in Ghana’s waters are not monitored is therefore untrue.
The GMA remains committed to continuous surveillance and the protection of Ghana’s maritime interests. We urge the public to disregard the claim and to rely on official communications from the Authority”.
In other news, Henry Nana Boakye, commonly known as Nana B, the National Organiser of the NPP, has alleged that drug lords have established labs in Ghana.
According to Nana B, the NPP’s intelligence gathered suggests drug traffickers have established clandestine laboratories in Ghana which are used to process narcotics for export.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the opposition NPP on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Henry Nana Boakye stated, “These drug lords, they have established basic laboratories here for processing of illicit drugs and narcotics under the watch of President Mahama”.
“And it appears that he doesn’t care.”
“That is the reason why volumes of drugs traced to Ghana keep surfacing in the folds of ships and the luggage of passengers in Sydney, Dunkirk and Johannesburg,” he said.
He further alleged that some government officials were facilitating the movement of narcotics out of the country.
Nana B also cited the cocaine case involving Nayele Ametefe during the previous Mahama administration.
“Ghanaians have not forgotten the Naa Ayele Ametefe scandal under the first Mahama administration where this drug trafficker was afforded the courtesy of the VVIP wing at the Kotoka International Airport before her arrest at Heathrow with cocaine in her bags,” he said.
“Today, under the second Mahama term, the same pattern has resurfaced. The same process has remained, and it has grown to be much worse,” he said.
“Some within our borders, others involving Ghanaians and Ghana-linked consignments intercepted abroad,” he said.
“This is not an isolated embarrassment; it is a pattern. And patterns demand accountability.”
