The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has disclosed that over 900 people have died in road crashes recorded across Ghana between January and August 2026.
According to the MTTD, within the eight months, about 9,000 crashes could have been prevented.
The MTTD detailed that approximately 15,000 vehicles were involved, while around 11,000 people sustained injuries of varying degrees.
ACP Alexander Obeng, the Director of Research, Education and Training at the MTTD, disclosed that the figures highlight the scale of the road safety challenge facing the country.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, September 28, ACP Obeng stated, “Between January and August, we can report that we have recorded about 9,000 preventable crashes involving about 15,000 vehicles of all categories and models, with about 11,000 Ghanaians having sustained various degrees of injury as a result of these preventable crashes”.
He highlighted that tackling the situation would require a combination of proactive measures.
ACP Obeng called for sustained road safety education and reactive interventions to reduce the impact of crashes and protect motorists, passengers and pedestrians.
In related news, four people have been tragically killed in a road crash involving a Toyota Voxy and a MAN Diesel trailer on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
Reports suggest the crash occurred in the early hours of Monday, September 28, 2026, at Anyinasin Junction.
The information gathered disclosed that the Bunso Fire Station received a distress call at 5:21 a.m. and arrived at the scene at 5:35 a.m. with a seven-member crew.
The Bunso Firefighters rescued trapped victims, secured the scene and helped manage traffic.
Reports detailed that a Toyota Voxy, with registration number GR 9430-26, was completely wrecked in the crash, while the MAN Diesel trailer, registered GS 4064-26, was also damaged.
A male victim was rescued and transported to the Kibi Government Hospital for medical attention.
However, four other victims, three males and one female, were declared dead at the scene.
Also, some weeks ago, thirteen (13) people were tragically killed with five others critically injured in a fatal road accident on the Sege Highway.
According to reports, the accident involved a Ford Transit and a Toyota Hiace on the Sege Highway.
All 18 people involved in the accident were occupants of the two vehicles.
The information gathered disclosed that the five survivors, who sustained critical injuries in the crash, have been transported to the Sege Polyclinic for medical attention; however, the extent of their injuries remains unclear.
Meanwhile, authorities are expected to conduct investigations to determine the cause of the accident and establish the sequence of events leading to the crash.
The recent crash has raised fresh concerns about road safety along the Sege-Ada stretch.
