Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has defended the NPP’s position of Ghana having a drug lab for cocaine-related activities.
The minority leader shockingly claimed the comment was metaphorical and intended to provide context to concerns raised by government officials.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the NPP claim should not be described as a claim requiring him to provide evidence of Ghana being a cocaine hub.
He stressed that the comment was based on concerns over cocaine allegedly passing through Ghana’s borders and statements attributed to government officials about possible official involvement.
Speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam, Mr Afenyo-Markin stated, “It is not a matter of evidence. The statement was what I will call metaphorical; it was a metaphor”.
“If you are allowing your corridors to be flooded with cocaine and every now and then there are arrests, cocaine passes through your borders without any proper checks, when your own Cabinet Minister comes to say that, one, there are government officials involved, and two, the foreign partners don’t trust Ghana because they feel that our system is compromised,” he added.
“What you are telling us is that you have created a lab for a cocaine business to drive,” he noted.
Afenyo-Markin further claimed that describing Ghana as a “hub” was meant to illustrate how the country could become a transhipment point.
“So the language used was a metaphor and basically situating what we find out ourselves in a certain context. If you allow your corridors to be used and it gets out of control, obviously you are creating a hub for that business to be processed,” he added.
Meanwhile, Kwaku Sintim-Misa, popularly known as KSM, a Ghanaian satirist, social commentator and talk show host, has questioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour over their claim that they have intelligence suggesting the existence of a cocaine manufacturing hub in Ghana.
KSM questioned the nature of the intelligence, asking why information about the alleged facility had reportedly not been shared with the country’s security agencies to enable them to investigate and take appropriate action.
He further challenged the NPP and Nana Agyei Baffour to explain whether it would be reasonable to withhold such potentially critical information if the intelligence was credible and could assist security agencies in locating and dismantling the alleged facility.
Speaking on the KSM Show on September 25, 2026, KSM stated, “If you have intelligence that, in this country, we are manufacturing cocaine, first of all, my question is this: What kind of intelligence is this? Is it an intelligence agency that reports only to the party in opposition?
“Because I am thinking that if this intelligence is around and available, why are they not reporting it to NACOC, National Security? You have intelligence leading to this, and yet, folks, you are withholding the intelligence. Is it sensible? I am just asking a very simple question,” KSM said.
“If it is a fact, truth, that there are drug hubs and you are pursuing, then go all the way out. Is the intelligence so powerful and so credible that it cannot work with National Security, NACOC, and say, ‘This is where the hub for production is,’ and then we move in and go and bust in Rambo style, like they do everywhere in the world? That is how you fight the drug menace,” he noted.
