Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has alleged that some New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament are facing threats.
According to Afenyo-Markin, whenever some NPP MPs criticise the John Dramani Mahama-led government, they are threatened.
The Minority leader disclosed that some of his colleagues have been invited for questioning and subjected to investigations after speaking out against the government.
Speaking on Badwam on Adom TV, Afenyo-Markin stated, “Anytime we criticise the NDC even in Parliament, MPs are threatened, and it is me telling you this: there are times that some of my colleagues are afraid to speak up because of these things. They send me a message that they do not want to speak up on the Floor because of this”.
Afenyo-Markin further claimed that some NPP MPs have been invited for questioning and kept for several hours because they criticised the government.
“They will invite such MPs, and they can spend close to 7 hours at BNI, and they won’t even interrogate you, but they will intentionally invite you”, he added.
The Minority leader also labelled the Mahama-led NDC government as becoming intolerant of criticisms, arguing that MPs have the right to express their views.
Also, the Minority Leader, on the same show, defended his party’s position of Ghana having a drug lab for cocaine-related activities.
The minority leader shockingly claimed the comment was metaphorical and intended to provide context to concerns raised by government officials.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the NPP claim should not be described as a claim requiring him to provide evidence of Ghana being a cocaine hub.
He stressed that the comment was based on concerns over cocaine allegedly passing through Ghana’s borders and statements attributed to government officials about possible official involvement.
Afenyo-Markin stated, “It is not a matter of evidence. The statement was what I will call metaphorical; it was a metaphor”.
“If you are allowing your corridors to be flooded with cocaine and every now and then there are arrests, cocaine passes through your borders without any proper checks, when your own Cabinet Minister comes to say that, one, there are government officials involved, and two, the foreign partners don’t trust Ghana because they feel that our system is compromised,” he added.
“What you are telling us is that you have created a lab for a cocaine business to drive,” he noted.
Afenyo-Markin further claimed that describing Ghana as a “hub” was meant to illustrate how the country could become a transhipment point.
“So the language used was a metaphor and basically situating what we find out ourselves in a certain context. If you allow your corridors to be used and it gets out of control, obviously you are creating a hub for that business to be processed,” he added.
