Martin Kpebu, a private legal practitioner, has argued that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) chance to really return to power will be in the 2032 election and not the 2028 election.
Lawyer Kpebu argued that Ghana’s recent political arrangement makes an NPP return in the 2028 election unlikely, based on the political pattern.
According to Kpebu, even if he is not satisfied with the NDC government’s current administration, that would not automatically make him support the NPP or Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the next election.
Speaking to Isaac Addae on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Kpebu stated, “Worst case, if I’m not happy with them, the worst case is not to appear. That’s, I won’t go and vote. But I cannot turn around in four years and go and vote for Bawumia. I don’t know how I can support Bawumia in four years”.
“So what the argument I’m building is that if anything at all, the NPP’s chance to really return will be 2032,” he said.
Lawyer Kpebu added, “So why would I be waiting for the next six years when I can go and beg right now for something? I mean, do I look that foolish?”.
The private legal practitioner further argued that it would make little sense for him to seek assistance from an opposition leader whose return to power was uncertain.
Kpebu further rejected suggestions that his political engagements are motivated by financial benefits, insisting that he and those who worked on the ORAL report received no payment for the exercise.
“And for the records, the ORAL report, we didn’t take one cedi. One cedi, even fuel, we didn’t take. We went to work with our own fuel, water, etc. We didn’t take one cedi,” he said.
Meanwhile, Paul Afoko, an aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has told party delegates that if he is elected chairman, the party will only spend two years in opposition.
Paul Afoko expressed confidence that the party can return to government in 2028, pledging to prioritise unity if elected National Chairman.
According to Paul Afoko, the NPP would need only two years in opposition before returning to power, provided the party reunited and rebuilt its structures.
Speaking to delegates in the Western, Central and Eastern Regions as part of his campaign tour, Paul Afoko stated, “I do not have a magic wand, but I can assure you that if we close our ranks and rally behind me to become the National Chairman, we have only two years to stay in opposition, and then power will be ours”.
“We have all the ingredients for victory. What we lack is unity. My message to every constituency, every region, is simple: set aside our differences, reunite as one family, and rebuild the structures that have made us formidable in the past,” he said.
Earlier, Paul Afoko had said the NPP will return to power and remain in government for more than eight years.
According to Paul Afoko, the NPP must be united, calling on party members not to be divided based on the candidates they supported.
He disclosed that the NPP must strengthen its structures at the constituency and polling station to recapture power and stay in power to not only break the eight but also the twelve.
Speaking to NPP supporters after filing nomination to contest NPP National Chairmanship, Paul Afoko stated, “We have to re-organise and strengthen the party and the foundation, which is the constituencies, the polling stations, because that is where power lies, and then we will recapture power, and we will stay in power, and we will not only break the 8; we will break the 12”.
“There cannot be one NPP for those who supported candidate A and another NPP for another candidate. There cannot be an NPP of the powerful and another NPP for the forgotten grassroots. There is only one NPP ethic, and everybody must have a place in it,” he noted.
“If you elect me as chairman of the party, I will come into office with no enemies. There is nobody that I want to punish,” he stated.
