The contractor working on the Kumasi-Konongo Bypass has told the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza they are having issues with Second Chance Church, founded and led by Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah.
According to the contractor, persistent drainage challenges and the failure of a section of the road to access works and activities around the Second Chance Church.
The contractor disclosed that the affected section had completely failed, compelling the project team to excavate the area and undertake extensive filling works using boulders and crushed rock.
He disclosed that nearly two metres of material had been added to raise the road, but the drainage problem had persisted.
The contractor stated, “All the cross-drainages that we did here are all silted again because of the activities from this area”.
According to the contractor, access routes being created around Second Chance are a major challenge to the project.
He explained, “We are having issues with the access being created around Second Chance, the church of Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah, and that is what has actually caused the failure here”.
The contractor argued that the situation was particularly concerning because the drainage infrastructure could become blocked after the road rehabilitation works were completed.
He further disclosed that the road had originally been about a metre lower but had since been raised by almost two metres to address the recurring failure, adding that despite the elevation, the drainage challenge remained unresolved.
The Accra-Kumasi Highway contractor disclosed that asphalt works on the affected section were expected to commence within a week but cautioned that unless the drainage and access problems were addressed before the asphalt works, the road could suffer another failure.
Meanwhile, the Roads Minister has urged contractors working on the Accra-Kumasi Bypass to put in their maximum effort to ensure the project is completed on schedule.
Agbodza commended contractors who have remobilised to site and resumed work after previously being inactive.
Speaking during an inspection of the Accra-Kumasi Bypass on Tuesday, September 29, Agbodza stated, “One of the most challenging lots on the bypasses is Konongo, because of the congestion it creates using the existing carriageway. So the biggest concern of our people in the Ashanti Region about this road is particularly about the Konongo bypass.
“You are right; all the contractors were not working before 2024. And we’ve been working with them and the Highway Authority for a period. And when we were in Kumasi the last time, the stakeholders appealed for a speedy completion. And I remember getting in touch with Kofi Job to remobilise to the site. And indeed, they mobilised to the site even ahead of what we were expecting”.
“We want to thank Kofi Job and all of them who have remobilised to the site and are working. We have very high confidence in all the contractors working on the bypass project to be able to complete it by the end of 2027”.
“We can see that some of the contractors are working harder than the others. Don’t forget somebody has actually completed his work and handed it over. So we are just encouraging the other contractors. Yes, the terrain may not be the same for the various lots, but let’s see you putting in your maximum effort to get this completed,” he said.
The Roads Minister stressed that the immediate priority is to make the Konongo section motorable within the shortest possible time before Christmas.
“We must necessarily complete this section or at least make it motorable within the shortest possible time. I think before Christmas we should be able to complete those structures so that people can decide to drive on this side as well. It may be a bit dusty, but at least an alternative for this. So we are happy about this,” he said.
