Strong winds send materials crashing down from Villaggio building under construction

A video has emerged showing strong winds sending materials crashing down from a building under construction at Villaggio in Spanner, a suburb of Accra, on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

The viral footage, shared on X, captured the moment sections of the structure, which appeared to be an extension of the Villaggio Hotel, gave way amid the strong winds.

The video showed what appeared to be large concrete blocks and other debris tumbling from the building as people nearby scrambled to safety.

Loud noises could also be heard coming from the structure moments before parts of it began falling.

A man recording the incident stated, “The building dey collapse. The side of the building is falling off.”

It remains unclear whether construction workers were present at the site when the incident occurred.

Meanwhile, authorities have not reported any casualties in connection with the incident as of the time of writing.

Some Ghanaians reacting to the video stated, “i don’t think it’s part of the building; it could be some of the materials stored in the building or leftover materials.

Whether these were construction materials or parts of the building itself, it raises serious questions about site safety and how materials are secured, especially during heavy winds. The developers need to investigate and ensure this does not put lives at risk”.

A netizen added, “Let’s be mindful of social media captions because this shows a clear sign of materials not properly stored but not part of the building. Also, the PM must be held accountable for failing to install perimeter safety netting to protect workers and the public from falling objects”.

“The structure is not failing (the building is not breaking). It could be a planned demolition of the blocks, or the newly laid blocks on that stretch, not yet joined to the columns, are breaking off due to the heavy wind.

The only problem is there is no safety net around the building”, one X user alleged.

In related news, Massimiliano Colasuonno Taricone, the Consul of Ghana to Italy and Trasacco Boss, has passionately rebutted claims that the luxury Villaggio apartment complex causes Accra flooding.

The Trasacco Boss was replying to a netizen who claimed the luxury Villaggio apartment is one of the major causes of the flood issue.

The netizen in his post claimed, “If we seriously want to talk about the flood issue, then this building is one of the major causes”.

However, Massimiliano Colasuonno Taricone in his reply, argued that Villaggio is not only the vanguard of Accra’s design but a model for how drainage systems should be implemented and managed.

He cited heavy private investments in drainage protection, litter prevention, and monthly cleaning at its low-lying site.

In a post on X, the Trasacco Boss argued, “In the past, I have tried in vain to explain, to nameless, empty-headed people like this one, that Villaggio represents not only the vanguard of Accra’s design but also a model for how drainage systems should be implemented and managed.

I have spoken about the funds invested to protect drainage points from littering and, above all, the money we spend monthly to clean them, even though there is a waste collection company that is supposed to do the job”.

He further accused critics of spreading unscientific “urban legends,” scapegoating wealthy developments and politicians instead of addressing personal failures in waste management and environmental respect that worsen floods.
