Ghana’s biggest opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), are set to hit the streets of Accra today, Tuesday, November 3, to protest over concerns surrounding the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa and the issuance of diplomatic and service passports.
The NPP protest, dubbed the “Yegyeyɛ Sika Demo,” will bring together members and supporters of the opposition party, particularly its youth base, to demand accountability from the government over several issues of national concern.
Speaking to Citi News, the NPP Volta Regional Youth Organiser, Emmanuel Senyo Amekplenu, stated, “If it is your money, you will not allow that to happen. If it is your company, you will not allow that to happen to your company, and so for that reason, we, as a responsible Minority, the youth wing of the New Patriotic Party, are leading the charge for the honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to render an account to the Ghanaian people.
“The GH¢49.7 million that was given to Ablakwa, we want to know the true status of that money. Was there any error of transposition? Was there any accounting error in the course of balancing the account? We want to know.”
The protest seeks to press the government for greater accountability and transparency in expenditure on the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa and the issuance of official travel documents.
Earlier, speaking at a press conference on Thursday, the party’s National Youth Organiser, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, said the demonstration would allow citizens to demand answers from the government over the two controversies.
“The public money belongs to the people, so do the official documents of the Republic. The ministers hold them in trust, and when the trust is abused, it is the people who must rise and demand accountability,” Abanga Fuseini Yakubu stated.
The NPP has accused Ablakwa of wrongdoing in relation to the evacuation arrangements and passport-related matters.
According to the NPP, participants will gather at Villaggio, near the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange and opposite Accra Mall, at 6:00 a.m. before marching to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the demonstration expected to conclude at Jubilee House, the seat of government.
He further called on party supporters, youth organisers, constituency and polling station executives, as well as women’s groups, to turn out in large numbers for the protest.
The NPP’s planned demonstration comes amid continued criticism from the opposition over the government’s handling of the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa and questions surrounding the issuance of diplomatic and service passports.
Beyond the Foreign Affairs Minister, the NPP has also demanded the resignation of the Minister for Youth and Sports over a separate visa-related controversy that preceded the resignation of the National Sports Authority’s chief executive.
Meanwhile, the November 3 demonstration is expected to intensify the party’s calls for accountability over the issues it has raised against the government.
In addition, a video has surfaced of a chaotic moment when some Ghanaians interrupted the Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s speech at a community engagement in Toronto, Canada.
In the video shared on Facebook on October 28, 2026, the protesters were captured holding placards bearing the words “Yɛgye Yɛn Sika!”, which translates to “We want our money back” as they approached the Foreign Affairs Minister, who was delivering a speech.
The Minister, who was stunned by the protesters, looked on while the demonstrators chanted “Yɛgye Yɛn Sika!”.
Some men were also spotted in the video attempting to prevent the protesters from moving closer to the minister, who was standing on a podium, with one protester shouting, “Don’t hold me. We want our money back.”
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who was stunned by the disruption, had to momentarily pause as the commotion had attracted the attention of the audience, with many turning to watch the protesters.
The Yɛgye Yɛn Sika protest comes amid continuing public scrutiny over the government’s GH¢49.72 million South Africa evacuation exercise, which brought 1,964 Ghanaians home.
