The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have suspended their planned nationwide sit-down strike.
According to the Union, the decision follows government officials’ pledge to address concerns over trading activities along major road corridors.
The two transport unions announced the planned industrial action on November 2, 2026, accusing the authorities of failing to clear roads of trading activities, which they say contribute to congestion and create difficulties for transport operators.
The strike, if carried out, was expected to disrupt commercial transport services across the country.
However, in a joint statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, the unions announced their decision to call off the action following discussions with government officials.
According to the statement, the decision was reached after a meeting on Tuesday, November 3, with the Ministers of the Interior, Transport, and Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
The unions said the ministers had given firm assurances that their concerns would be addressed, including the removal of traders from road corridors, the provision of adequate road signage, sustained public education and regular engagement with transport operators.
“The Ministers assured us of their firm commitments to address our concerns, including the trading activities on road corridors, adequate signage, sustained public education and continued engagement with transport operators,” the statement said.
As part of the outcome of the meeting, a committee has also been established to identify areas affected by roadside trading and recommend appropriate measures to resolve the problem.
Despite suspending the planned strike, the GPRTU and GRTCC have given the government 30 days to address the issues raised during their engagement.
They warned that failure to meet the deadline could force them to revive the planned industrial action.
“It is our expectation that all our concerns raised during the meeting will be addressed within 30 days, failure of which we would have no option but to embark on the sit-down strike,” the statement added.
The two unions expressed appreciation to the ministers for their prompt response and engagement, while apologising to commuters and the general public for the inconvenience the proposed strike could have caused.
The development follows five transport unions who earlier announced a nationwide shutdown of commercial transport operations on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, over TRAFFITECH fines and government failure to clear traders from bus stops.
In a statement dated November 1, 2026, the five unions disclosed that the planned action had become necessary due to what they described as the government’s continued neglect in enforcing L.I. 2519, Regulation 142.
They expressed concern over the persistent occupation of bus stops by traders, arguing that the situation has made it increasingly difficult for commercial drivers to operate within designated spaces.
The transport Unions also raised concerns about the unfair treatment of drivers, who continue to face fines through the government’s TRAFFITECH-GH traffic monitoring system despite being unable to access bus stops occupied by traders.
They alleged that commercial drivers are being penalised for traffic violations while authorities fail to address the activities of traders occupying designated bus stops and pedestrian walkways.
The Unions have directed all commercial drivers to park their vehicles on Wednesday, November 4, until further notice.
The unions further apologised to commuters and the general public for the inconvenience the shutdown may cause.
The transport union statement was jointly endorsed by representatives of the GPRTU of TUC, Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, True Drivers Union, Ghana Committed Drivers Association and Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana.
