Fifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, is qualified to run for president.

According to Fifi Kwetey, Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s years of dedicated service to the party make him qualified to seek the highest political office.

He argued that there is nothing unacceptable about Asiedu Nketia pursuing a presidential ambition, should he decide to enter the NDC flagbearer race.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, November 3, Fifi Kwetey stated, “It shouldn’t be a problem at all. I mean, he qualifies to run for president”.

“Of course. I mean, he has served the party diligently. I mean, at the highest level, if he wants to go for it, should I call it the highest position of the party, why not?” he said.

However, Fifi Kwetey was careful not to declare support for Asiedu Nketia’s possible presidential bid.

He insisted that his responsibility was to ensure a level playing field for all prospective candidates.

He said, “For me, it’s not about support; at the moment, my job for now is to ensure that the party as a vehicle remains strong and ensure that we create a fair playing field for everybody and then let the party make that determination as to where next we ought to go”.

“So it will not be my choice at all. It will be the choice of the masses. And our people are very discerning,” he said.

In related news, Mahdi Gibril, the NDC Director of Elections and IT, has disclosed that the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, popularly known as “General Mosquito”, is not seeking re-election.

According to Mahdi Gibril, Asiedu Nketiah had not picked forms by the close of nominations and had not indicated an intention to contest.

“These are those I know that did not pick. In any case, they did not indicate to us that they would pick,” Mr Gibril said.

Following Asiedu Nketia’s skipping the NDC chairmanship contest, speculations about his presidential ambition have reemerged.

Although Asiedu Nketia has not formally declared his presidential bid, the speculation comes amid rumours he intends to contest the NDC’s presidential primary ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The NDC National Chairman on numerous occasions refused to rule out contesting for the flagbearership position of his party.

According to Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, he would make his intentions known when the time was right, adding that his political options remain wide open.

He argued that ambition was an essential part of politics, adding that politicians without ambition are in the wrong profession.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah stated, “Ambition is a very useful thing in politics. If you are a politician and you have no ambition, you are in the wrong profession”.

“I have told you how I would clearly declare it when the time is up for me to do so,” he said.

“How do you hide pregnancy? If you hide your intention to contest for a position, how do you campaign?” he asked.

When directly asked by the host whether he personally aspired to become President, the NDC Chairman stated, “Is the time up? That is the question I’m asking you. Wait till my time is up, and then I will let you know”.

“Sitting here, I can choose to become the next national organiser of NDC. There is no law that bars me. I can choose to become a general secretary again, and contest with my brother and very good friend Fifi Kwetey.

“I can decide to remain the national chairman, and I can decide to contest and go back to parliament. I can decide to be the presidential candidate, and so all these are options that are open.”

“There will be nothing wrong with that. You need to keep people guessing. Guessing is also part of the game.”

When pressed again on whether he was deliberately refusing to rule out a presidential bid, Asiedu Nketiah stated, “No, no, no, no, no. I have never ruled any position out in my life. I’m not ruling any position out.”
