President John Mahama’s appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) has sparked debate on social media following her swearing-in.

The controversy follows the resurfacing of social media posts and an article highlighting Agbenyo’s alleged involvement in the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s campaign ahead of the 2024 general election.

In one of her posts published before the election, Agbenyo expressed her intention to vote against the Akufo-Addo administration, accusing the government of disregarding the hardships faced by Ghanaians.

She wrote, “I will be voting against a government that ridiculed the pains of the people. Imposing a nuisance levy on citizens is not a thing to celebrate. Governance is no joke; citizens are not your enemies”.

Additionally, an article detailing Agbenyo’s involvement in the NDC’s campaign efforts ahead of the 2024 elections has resurfaced online following her appointment.

According to the article, she served on the party’s governance team alongside Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Sylvester Mensah as a sectoral spokesperson for the NDC’s Resetting Ghana manifesto.

The resurfaced posts and article have triggered reactions from social media users, with some questioning whether her reported political involvement makes her suitable for the role of Deputy EC Chairperson.

Some netizens have also expressed concerns about her political affiliation and its implications for the Electoral Commission’s independence and impartiality ahead of the 2028 general election.

Netizens alleged that Emelia Afi Agbenyo would not hesitate to rig the 2028 general election in favour of the NDC.

Meanwhile, , Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the NPP Communications Director, has slammed the John Mahama government following the appointment of the Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Miracles Aboagye on TV3 is quoted to have said, “There’s a video of the newly appointed Deputy EC Chair Emelia Afi Agbenyo standing at an NDC campaign rally, wearing an NDC T-shirt. She was also the spokesperson for the NDC Manifesto Committee. How can we stoop so low?”

Also on Citi FM, Miracles Aboagye said the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission is shameful.

He argued that for the Mahama government to simply go into the NDC’s database and pick one of their political party operatives as a Deputy Electoral Commissioner is a complete shame.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Miracles Aboagye stated, “It’s a shame. We have a government and a party that doesn’t even see how embarrassing it is to simply go into the party’s database and pick one of their political party operatives and appoint her as a Deputy Electoral Commissioner. It is a complete shame”.

Miracles Aboagye further argued that Ghana has come a long way in building its democracy, adding that the independent institutions should not be tainted by partisan politics.

He added, “We have come very far as a country trying to build our democracy. And one of the things we know we don’t do is to try and touch some of these independent bodies in such a very, very blatant manner.

“You know, this government went after our Chief Justice by illegally bullying her and removing her. Now they’re going to the Electoral Commission as well,” he added.

However, Rashid Tanko Computer, the Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticised Dennis Miracles Aboagye, over his concerns about the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Speaking on TV3’s Daily Brief, Rashid questioned Aboagye’s criticism, citing the appointment of Prof. Appiahene, whom he said previously served as the NPP’s Director of Elections in the Bono East Region before becoming an EC commissioner.

“I am surprised my brother Dennis is speaking this way. Is Dennis Miracles Aboagye coming from Afghanistan or Somalia? Is he not a Ghanaian? Does he not know that one of the current commissioners, appointed by Akufo-Addo, Prof. Appiahene, was a Director of Elections for the NPP in the Bono East Region?” he asked.

Rashid further stated that when Prof. Appiahene was appointed during the Akufo-Addo administration, the NDC wrote to the Council of State to express its opposition to the appointment.

According to him, the party argued that someone who had served as the NPP’s Director of Elections should not be appointed an Electoral Commission commissioner. The Council of State wrote back to the NDC that, so long as he is qualified to be appointed and the president’s prerogative to appoint, they, the Council of State, have not seen anything wrong with it. Which party he was coming from is not material”.
