Patricia Appiagyei, the deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, has warned the party against any attempts to remove Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Patricia Appiagyei, any attempt to remove Afenyo-Markin will incur the wrath of Ghanaians.
She argued that Afenyo-Markin had demonstrated the wisdom, courage and intelligence required to lead the Minority Caucus in Parliament.
The deputy minority leader further disclosed that she had neither heard nor seen any move to remove Afenyo-Markin from his position but cautioned against any such attempt.
Speaking on Asaase radio, Patricia Appiagyei stated, “I haven’t heard nor seen it. But any attempt to remove Afenyo-Markin will incur the wrath of Ghanaians. Because he is a man of wisdom, courage and has intelligence to steer the affairs of the caucus, and this is shaping us and, by extension, has made the NPP attractive”.
“He came in as a courageous and certain honesty, and he is very intelligent, and that is why he has succeeded in parliament. What I want to tell you is that he is loved by Ghanaians, especially the NPP,” she added.
“He has been able to use his own resources to train us, so we can deliver in the House, and this is not the first time it has occurred severally… And that is the man I am talking about,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Kotin, the Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Security and Counterterrorism, has told the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to resign.
According to Emmanuel Kotin, if Afenyo-Markin have any sense of dignity, resign to save the face of the Minority.
He argued that the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, must resign as Minority Leader due to the allegations of extortion levelled against him.
Kotin argued that the allegation alone had damaged the reputation of the Minority caucus and the NPP.
Speaking during a panel discussion on GBC’s Current Agenda on October 17, 2026, Kotin stated, “To save the face of the Minority, if Honourable Afenyo-Markin had any sense of dignity in him, he should have resigned as the Minority Leader”.
“He should have resigned because of the claim of him being an extortionist,” he added.
“So if you could file a defective application in court seeking defamation, what have you done to your party?” Mr Kotin questioned.
He further disclosed that his outfit had contacted some individuals within the party to understand why action had not been taken against the Minority Leader.
Kotin revealed that the response suggested that party members feared political repercussions.
He added, “When we contacted people within the party [to ask] why they are not pushing him to resign, it was an allegation of being connected to a certain politician, and if they push him now, the party will suffer some harm”.
“It is better to push him out now, repair whatever damage the party seeks to get, than leaving him there for another issue of this nature to come. Who will take Afenyo-Markin seriously again in this country?” he asked.
Kotin further lamented that the extortion allegation had dominated national discourse for weeks, distracting attention from pressing social and economic issues, including a recent World Bank report on financial losses.
Also, Ross Osei Owusu, a Private legal practitioner and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) legal team, has said Alexander Afenyo-Markin should not remain Minority Leader in Parliament.
According to Ross Osei Owusu, Afenyo-Markin should not remain Minority Leader in Parliament if he fails to clear his name over allegations of extortion levelled against him by Sammy Gyamfi.
He argued that the Minority Leader must take steps to exonerate himself from the allegations, stressing that the matter should be pursued through the courts.
Osei Owusu recognised that the allegations remained unproven but argued that the Minority Leader needed to take steps to exonerate himself.
Speaking on GHOne TV’s Breakfast Review on October 15, 2026, Osei Owusu stated, “If he’s an extortionist, then we don’t want him as a Minority Leader of Parliament”.
“It remains an allegation, but he needs to purge himself of that allegation,” he stated, adding that Afenyo-Markin should be removed as Minority Leader if he failed to clear his name.
