Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has suspended his scheduled “Thank You Tour” of the North East Region.
The suspension follows security concerns linked to a recent attack on a military convoy in Bawku.
Asiedu Nketiah’s two-day tour was scheduled to begin on April 29 with visits to Yagaba, Walewale, and Nalerigu, before continuing on April 30 to Bunkpurugu, Yunyoo, and Chereponi.
A senior member of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) confirmed the suspension, revealing that security agencies advised against proceeding with the visit as a precautionary measure.
A source, according to JOYNEWS, stated, “Anytime there are disturbances, there are spillover effects. To be safe, we have decided to avoid the trip and focus on finding a lasting solution to these issues”.
“We cannot downplay the situation, but there are other equally important engagements.”
The development follows, Ten people have been killed following an attack on a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) escort convoy at Binduri in the Upper East Region.
Among the ten dead, three have been confirmed as civilians, with seven others being assailants.
GAF, in a statement issued, detailed that the military successfully repulsed the attack, arrested 10 suspects, and recovered weapons, including a G3 rifle and ammunition.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Army stated, “A Ghana Armed Forces escort convoy protecting 140 civilians was attacked this morning. Monday, 27 April 2026, at Binduri by unknown elements. The convoy from Bawku towards Bolga was shot at several times, resulting in the death of 3 of the civilians being escorted and injuring one.
In the process, the military successfully repulsed the attack on the convoy, resulting in the death of 7 assailants. In pursuit, the military discovered and retrieved from an escapee who went to a mosque, a G3 automatic rifle,2 full magazines of 20 rounds each and 176 rounds of additional ammunition. Ten other suspects were arrested and are assisting with investigations.
The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to caution all to desist from engaging the military or any other security service during its operations. It extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and wishes the injured a speedy recovery”.
Also, the Acting Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces, Captain (Navy) Veronica Adzo Arhin, speaking on Channel One Newsroom, has disclosed that twenty-one have been arrested over the attack on a military-escorted convoy.
Captain (Navy) Veronica Adzo Arhin revealed that the suspects are assisting police with investigations.
She also confirmed that seven of the attackers were killed during an exchange of fire with military personnel, warning against attacks on security personnel on official duty.
“Please do not attack the military, especially when they are on official duty. When you do that, it is needless lives that will be lost because we need to protect ourselves and protect whatever assignment we have been given,” Captain (Navy) Veronica Adzo Arhin stated.
