Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, a former Ghanaian boxer, has been remanded into police custody for one week.

Ayitey Powers was remanded by the Dansoman Circuit Court after he appeared before the court on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

The former boxer was remanded over an alleged death threat against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

Ayitey Powers is expected to reappear before the court on September 2, 2026, as police investigations into the matter continue.

The development follows the Ghana Police Service, which some days ago announced the arrest of 46-year-old former Ghanaian professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as “Ayitey Powers”.

Ayitey Powers was arrested over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo on August 24, 2026.

The arrest follows a video circulating on social media in which he allegedly issued the threat.

He is currently in police custody assisting with investigations as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and determine appropriate legal action.

In a statement issued by the Police read, “1. The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested Michael Ayitey Okai, alias “Ayitey Powers,” a 46-year-old former professional boxer, in connection with an alleged threat of death made against Mr Yaw Ampofo, Director-General of the National Sports Authority, on 24th August 2026.

2. The arrest follows a video circulating on social media in which the suspect is alleged to have issued the threat.

3. The suspect, Michael Ayitey Okai, is currently in Police custody assisting with investigations

4. The Accra Regional Police Command wishes to assure the public that investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and to take appropriate action in accordance with the law.

5. The Command further urges the public to refrain from spreading unverified information concerning the matter while investigations are ongoing”.
