Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, has slammed the Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s visits to state-owned institutions, describing the development as bewildering, shocking and unprecedented.
According to the former Information Minister, in all the years that he has followed politics and governance, he has never seen or heard a Chief Justice tour state-owned enterprises.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen on Wednesday, September 2, Oppong Nkrumah stated, “For all the years that I have followed politics and governance, I haven’t heard of such that the Chief Justice will be touring state-owned enterprises. I haven’t heard of that before.”
“The Judiciary is supposed to be more or less independent. It’s an arm of government on its own; they don’t mingle with whether it’s the Legislature or the Executive,” he stated.
“It is a well-known, established practice that the Judiciary doesn’t mingle, so you don’t see judges going around mingling in public,” he added.
“So, if upon that now there are official tours that are going on, it’s bewildering, and then I find it strange to hear some of these comments being made by the Judiciary,” he said.
“My first reaction is that this is bewildering; it’s absolutely shocking. This is unprecedented. I haven’t seen that before, that the Judiciary will get involved at this level,” he added.
Oppong Nkrumah’s comment follows that of Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, who toured some state-owned institutions expressing astonishment at the performance of their over the past eight years.
According to Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, comparing the current progress of some state institutions with their performance over the past eight years, he wonders what went wrong in the last eight years.
The Chief Justice lauded the performance of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and other public institutions under the current Mahama administration.
Speaking during a visit to MIIF on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, he said he was impressed by what he had seen at the institution and other state entities.
Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie stated, “I must congratulate you. I mean, you have done marvellously well. Sometimes, when we hear about the things that you have done and the things that some organisations are doing now, we wonder. Some of us keep wondering what we really have been doing in the past eight years”.
“We’ve just come back from SSNIT. We went to SSNIT this morning, and the kind of things that we heard and what we had heard even before we went there, if you compare that with the fact that, not too long ago, SSNIT was preparing to sell its prized assets like the Labadi Beach Hotel, you wonder how Ghana could have sunk so low,” he added.
In related news, President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the boards of nine state institutions with immediate effect.
The decision was announced through a statement on Wednesday, September 2 by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
According to the statement, the relevant sector ministers have been directed to take all necessary steps to give effect to the dissolution of the boards.
Parts of the statement read, “Relevant sector Ministers have been directed to take all necessary steps, in accordance with the applicable laws and governing instruments, to give effect to the dissolution of these Boards.
“The affected Boards will be reconstituted in due course,” the statement concludes.
