Carpenter in police custody for defiling his 11-year-old daughter commits suicide

A 38-year-old man identified as Emmanuel Cudjoe has reportedly committed suicide while in police custody at the Agyei Krom Police Station in the Central Region.

Emmanuel Cudjoe was arrested on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at about 5:00 am over allegations of defilement involving his 11-year-old stepdaughter.

The carpenter was being held at the station as investigations into the case continued.

According to reports, the deceased was found hanging in his cell with a piece of cloth allegedly torn from a blanket, with preliminary findings showing no visible signs of injury.

The Station Officer was later informed by the Counter NCO that the suspect had been found hanging in his cell around 11:00 am that same day.

Following the incident, reports suggest officers from the Elmina District Police Command, together with personnel from the Regional Crime Scene Management team, visited the station to evaluate the situation.

Initial examinations, according to the police, showed no visible signs of physical assault or struggle on the body.

It was, however, revealed that a piece of cloth was found tightly secured around his neck.

The body of  Emmanuel Cudjoe has been deposited at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital morgue.

Some netizens reacting to the news stated, “@GhPoliceService, you killed the man. Extrajudicial killings are what we’re witnessing these last three months. Blood on your hands”.

An X user added, “Probably he did it, or he was innocent because just recently a girl lied to his father that he was sleeping with her and even got her pregnant

With issues like this, I don’t always draw conclusions until the evidence is clear”.

One X user noted, “Why are we ignoring the rising cases of fathers defiling their kids and cases of paedophilia in this country. In the same way, they’re arresting Ghanaians for similar cases abroad. Kids are no longer safe in this country. What’s happening?”

“This story about the blanket and hanging again?? So Ghana police, how many times must people hang themselves with pieces from blankets in your custody for something to be done about it??”, another netizen added.

A netizen added, “What’s this week and defilement cases, something needs to be done asap, may his soul rest in peace”.

One last X user added, “he should rest well, and they should increase scrutiny inside custody, no one should escape punishment this easily”.
