Commuters across Ghana from Saturday, September 26, 2026, will pay higher fares following an 8% increase announced by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).
Following the 8% increase announced by the two transport bodies, they have released the detailed fare schedule covering shared taxis, intra-city trotros and inter-city services.
A standard intra-city fare of GH¢5 will rise to GH¢5.50, while passengers who currently pay GH¢10 will now pay GH¢11.
At the higher end of the intra-city fare structure, a journey that currently costs GH¢30 will increase to GH¢32.40, while the highest listed fare of GH¢34 will rise to GH¢36.80.
The new adjustment will also affect shared taxi fares. Passengers travelling up to four kilometres will see their fare increase from GH¢2.60 to GH¢2.90. For journeys of up to 40 kilometres, the fare will rise from GH¢18.70 to GH¢20.20.
Inter-city passengers will also be affected by the fare adjustment. A journey currently costing GH¢25 will increase to GH¢27, while a GH¢100 fare will rise to GH¢108.
The highest fare on the revised schedule, currently set at GH¢300, will increase to GH¢324.
According to the transport unions, the 8% adjustment was calculated based on the approved transport fares that took effect on May 24, 2025.
The development follows GPRTU disclosing that transport fares are set to increase by 8% from Saturday, September 26, 2026, following an agreement with the Ministry of Transport.
The 8% adjustment follows weeks of negotiations after the GPRTU initially proposed a 30% increase to reflect rising operational costs.
Samuel Amoah, the Deputy Industrial and Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, revealed that the union eventually agreed to the 8% increase after the government assured transport operators of further reductions in fuel prices.
Deputy Industrial and Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, September 22, disclosed that the union had been seeking an increase of at least 25% but accepted the lower adjustment after discussions.
He stated, “It’s a promise given to us, and if it fails, we will still go back to the ministry to let them know that the promise given to us has not been fulfilled. Then we will see what will help our operations”.
