Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aspiring National Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said the Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie and the judiciary are becoming too close to the executive.
Miracles Aboagye defended the NPP’s planned protest on Thursday, August 6, arguing that His Lordship’s romance with the executive is becoming too glaring.
According to Miracles Aboagye, the NPP’s demonstration was driven by growing concerns over the Chief Justice’s relationship with the government and the selective application of justice.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, Miracles Aboagye stated, “That is also another matter. The selective justice, the selective application of our justice system, is also obvious to all of us. It’s become even now blatant”.
“I wrote a letter to His Lordship… where I itemised my worry about his relationship and his romance with the executive, and the fact that it’s becoming too glaring.”
He revealed that although he did not receive a direct response, the Judicial Secretary issued a statement addressing some of the concerns he had raised.
“I thought, okay, it’s fine. At least they’ve clarified certain things,” he said.
He further argued, “I am of the view that we need to keep our judiciary very far away from our politics, far, far, far away from our politics. I don’t take those excuses of comparisons, those excuses of what was done. I don’t care. I am a citizen. I feel that, as it is happening today, I am worried about it. I want to speak up.”
“The 10s and 1000s of people you will be seeing tomorrow on the street are simply saying that the judiciary seems to be romancing with the executive and is making the executive too comfortable.”
“I felt uncomfortable that you are looking too close. The proximity within which you seem to be moving around with these people—it’s becoming too blatant, and it makes those of us who are obviously not liked by these people uncomfortable.”
He added, “Because I get worried that these people don’t like me… if you are this way with them, and I have an issue, they probably have your ears. I don’t. How safe am I?”
“There is no way… you have a lot of cases in the court, a lot of criminal cases, a lot of civil cases. Some of them predate even 2020… This year, you are going on legal vacation.
“You say that even though all of you are being tried in criminal cases, I have selected a few of you, and as for you, you can’t go and rest. You must go through the criminal procedure. That is selective justice.”
Meanwhile, the members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have taken to the streets of Accra to stage their “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration today, Thursday, August 6.
According to the NPP, their demonstration is aimed at defending civil liberties, the rule of law and democratic accountability following the attack on democracy under the current government.
Reports suggest the protest began its march from the Supreme Court, where they are expected to outline their concerns over recent judicial decisions and to present a petition.
The demonstrators will embark on a peaceful march through some principal streets of the capital before proceeding to the Jubilee House.
At the Presidency, the leadership of the NPP is expected to submit a second petition, urging President John Dramani Mahama to address what the party describes as increasing attacks on democratic institutions.
According to reports, the NPP protest has attracted support from other groups, including the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), which has thrown its weight behind the demonstration.
The NPP argued that their planned nationwide demonstration is over the Mahama government’s actions threatening Ghana’s democracy, constitutional order and the rule of law.
Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, the NPP National Organiser, addressing a press conference on Friday, July 31, stated, “The time for silence is over. The NPP serves notice that on 6th August, 2026, in collaboration with other political parties, CSOs, professional bodies, youth movements, student movements and all well-meaning citizens, we shall embark on a massive demonstration to defend our democracy, our constitution and the rule of law”.
Also, the NPP has announced that they have secured police approval for its planned August 6 demonstration.
