Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said Democracy is the worst system of government.
The NDC Chairman, however, noted that although Democracy is the worst system of government, there is no better alternative.
Speaking in an interview on Ambassadors TV on August 1, 2026, Asiedu Nketia stated, “Democracy is the worst system of government, but there is no better alternative. The first time we were going to parliament, no elections were held. There was no vote buying; we were trained to do what will help our nation, not what we will gain from the country”.
But today, the money you will pay for primaries, campaign should every candidate adds that money it will be huge. The money you will have to spend before getting into parliament: if you check the four years you will spend in parliament, all the money you spent to get into the chamber, your salary will not be enough. You might spend 10 million to get into parliament, but in four years your salary might be just 6 million. the remaining 4 million were will you get it from?
If the election people make losses, then people will decide not to contest again. But every MP want to go again.
If somebody is an MP at Manhyia, he will just satisfy the delegates more than the constituency because after the delegates vote for him, he will surely win”.
He further dismissed Ghana’s current asset declaration regime as ineffective in the fight against corruption.
Asiedu Nketia added, “On the issue of asset declaration, there is a way it can be used as a tool for fighting corruption. However, the way it is currently practised in Ghana does not achieve that purpose. Instead, it wastes resources and has little impact”.
“Public officials are asked to list the number of properties they own, but once submitted, the documents are sealed and never opened unless a court demands them. This means that only the individual knows what was declared, while the country has no way of verifying whether all assets were included,” he said.
“If asset declarations are not published, then the exercise achieves nothing. The Auditor-General, occupied with other responsibilities, simply stores the sealed documents until a court case requires them to be opened,” he added.
“Since I entered politics, no one has ever discussed the properties I declared, because they remain sealed and untouched,” he remarked.
“For this reason, the current asset declaration regime cannot be relied upon as an effective means of fighting corruption,” he emphasised.
Meanwhile, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has added that he is pained following the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, being jailed.
According to Asiedu Nketiah, he is in pain over Wontumi’s 20-year prison sentence because he will no longer be able to become the NPP’s national chairman.
He argued that Wontumi becoming the NPP national chairman would have made things easier for the NDC to win future elections.
Asiedu Nketiah also expressed disappointment with the NPP for criticising the government over Wontumi’s imprisonment, arguing that the party is disgracing itself because it would no longer have the moral authority to speak against illegal mining (galamsey).
He stated, “I feel pained when the NPP wants to tarnish the party’s image and follow Wontumi in this case. I am most worried. This is not the party I know. They are disgracing the party. What really pained me in Wontumi’s case is that now that he is jailed, he cannot become the national chairman.
“That is my only pain. So, I pray that Abronye should also win so that the election becomes easy for us,” he said.
