The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have urged Ghanaians to disregard the purported 20% fare increment.

In a joint statement, the GPRTU and GRTCC described the purported  20% increase in public transport fares as unauthorised and not sanctioned by the appropriate bodies.

In a statement signed by GPRTU General Secretary Godfred Abulbire and GRTCC General Secretary Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, it read, “The attention of the Executives of the Road Transport Operators has been drawn to media publications of a purported Twenty Per cent (20%) upward adjustment in Public Transport Fares effective 2nd June, 2026.

We wish to inform the general public that the Executives of the Road Transport Operators have not engaged the Ministry in any transport fare upward adjustment. The decision by the supposed group is illegal as it has not gone through the fare adjustment protocol and procedure agreed between the Ministry of Transport and the Road Transport Operators.

We therefore wish to condemn this decision in no uncertain terms and request the general public to disregard the publication by the supposed group with the contempt it deserves.

Accordingly, all road transport operators, unions, associations, drivers, vehicle owners, loading point managers, and allied stakeholders are hereby requested to maintain the existing approved fares and to refrain from implementing any unilateral fare adjustments until further notice.

We are monitoring the next pricing window, and should there be a need for any fare adjustment, the public will be duly notified.

We remain committed to prioritising the interests of both our drivers and commuters and will continue to work diligently toward safeguarding their welfare”.

In related news, the GPRTU Head of Industrial Relations, Alhaji Abass Imoro, some months ago, warned of a possible increase in transport fares.

According to Alhaji Abass Imoro, if the VIP is allowed to increase transport fares by 25%, they will also increase fares.

In a post shared by TV3, Alhaji Abass Imoro is quoted to have said, “If VIP is allowed to increase transport fares by 25 per cent, the union will instruct all GPRTU members to also increase fares”.

His remarks follow the Private transport operator VIP Jeoun Transport has announced an increase in its prices effective Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

According to the VIP, they last reviewed fares on April, 26,2024.

The VIP, in their statement, did not disclose their reasoning behind the upward adjustment to their fares.

In a post on Facebook, VIP stated, “VIP JEOUN Transport announces a fare increase effective Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

VIP JEOUN Transport first published this notice on 14/03/25 and SUSPENDED on 18/03/25.
