Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer and former Vice President, has disclosed that he held a high-level breakfast meeting with European Union (EU) ambassadors in Accra.
According to Dr Bawumia, the meeting was focused on strengthening economic cooperation, investment opportunities, and regional security collaboration.
In a post shared on social media on Tuesday, April 21, Dr Bawumia wrote, “Earlier today, I engaged in a high-level breakfast meeting with European Union Ambassadors in Accra.
The meeting brought together Heads of Mission from ten EU member states: Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malta, alongside a delegation from the European Union.
Our constructive and forward-looking discussions focused on shared priorities, including regional security, deepening economic cooperation, as well as expanding investment opportunities in Ghana.
I also reiterated my steadfast commitment to strengthening Ghana’s democratic institutions, advancing sustainable economic growth, and promoting inclusive social development”.
Some Ghanaians reacting to Dr Bawumia’s post stated, “Good for the optics. But these Ambassadors won’t forget how you slept on the job as head of the Economic Mismanagement Team, collapsed the economy with your 33 policies & wasted their investments through the Debt Exchange Program. Europeans mean business. They don’t trust you”.
A netizen added, “This sounds like a man campaigning to fix problems he helped create. Ghanaians won’t forget that.”
“Now it’s all vision and commitment, but when you held the steering wheel, the country stalled.”
“This is a Credibility Pivot. Your EU Breakfast and the Ghost of the DDEP. I do not mistake this meeting for an endorsement. It is a transactional dialogue.
Constructive engagement. However, the credibility gap persists for both local and foreign investors. To secure future growth, this narrative must reconcile forward-looking optimism with the sobering reality of the DDEP and the fiscal overreach of the past few years”, one X user added.
In related news, President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has said Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president, meant well for the country but had no power and locus under the Akufo-Addo administration.
Franklin Cudjoe recounted two or three transactions that he was privy to that actually made him ask himself what exactly the Vice President of the country does.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Starr FM, Franklin Cudjoe highlighted, “Dr Bawumia was a good man and is still a good man. He had no power; he had no locus. I recall that there were two or three transactions that we were privy to that actually made me ask myself what exactly the Vice President of the country does. Does he have power? In any case, it is not just with Ghana; there are other countries.
I wasn’t a bit surprised, but I was a bit worried. I felt that if the vice president could not have his way on a particular issue, like how to ensure that revenues at the port were protected…There was a policy that was being introduced, and we thought that the Vice President was on the right path, but apparently, the other side…I didn’t feel he was respected in that regard. Those decisions came back to bite the government.
We did an undercover job at the port, and we went to him, Mr Vice President, we need you to own this…He called all the guys who mattered at the ports, we met with them, and for three months, all the crazy stuff that goes on at the port was reduced.
I think that the Vice President meant well. I think that his theory of the understanding of economics was going to match reality. Some of the decisions taken by Ken on hindsight, I think he shouldn’t have been the finance minister,” he told Bola Ray on Starr FM in Accra.
