A netizen on X has alleged that Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Asiama is seeking to avoid accountability over an alleged $1.7 billion loss linked to the GoldBod.
The netizen claimed that Dr Asiama resigned from the GoldBod board to evade responsibility for the alleged losses incurred under the 2025 Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, which the post attributed to an alleged collaboration between the Governor and GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi.
The comments were made in reaction to Dr Asiama’s revelation that he had resigned from the GoldBod board.
In a viral video, Dr Johnson Asiama revealed that he resigned from the Board of Directors of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) about five months ago.
According to the BoG Governor, he no longer participates in GoldBod board meetings.
Dr Johnson Asiama disclosed that the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), does not require the Bank of Ghana Governor personally to serve on the GoldBod Board.
Speaking in a viral video shared on X, the BoG Governor stated, “I resigned from the GoldBod Board about five months ago or so. I do not attend board meetings at the GoldBod at all”.
“The law that governs the activities of the GoldBod, there’s a provision there for the Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of a director,” he said.
“It does not necessarily need the Governor to be there.”
Dr Johnson Asiama revelayions comes on the heels of concerns raised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over his membership of the GoldBod Board and whether his dual roles could create a conflict of interest.
Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, a Former Finance Minister and NPP MP for Karaga, raised the issue during an NPP press briefing on September 1.
The NPP concerns focused on the relationship between the central bank and GoldBod, including the Bank of Ghana’s involvement in financing GoldBod’s gold-purchasing operations and reported losses associated with the domestic gold purchase programme.
Meanwhile, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has said that while Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) continue to fail to account for the GH¢22 billion loss, Ghanaians in illegal mining communities are paying with their health.
According to Afenyo-Markin, Ghanaians in illegal mining communities are paying with their kidneys and lungs for the extensive pollution caused by illegal miners.
Speaking during Parliament’s emergency sitting on Monday, August 24, Afenyo-Markin stated, “As we speak, Ghanaians in mining communities across this country continue to suffer kidney failure, lung failure, and other grave conditions at alarming rates because of the extensive pollution that illegal mining has visited upon our water bodies and our air”.
“This has become nothing short of a widespread epidemic, one this government appears to have neither the clue nor the courage to confront.”
The Minority leader added, “So while Gold Board cannot account for 1.7 billion, an equivalent of 22 billion Ghanaian cedis, Ghanaians in our mining communities are paying with their kidneys, their lungs, and in other cases their lives”.
“This House owes them an answer too.”
Also, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has announced that the Minority in Parliament has filed a second motion seeking the establishment of an ad hoc committee to investigate the alleged GH¢22 billion loss linked to gold trade transactions involving the GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the motion also seeks to summon the Chief Executive Officer of the GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, to appear before the committee if Parliament approves the request.
