A man has accused the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) following the death of his brother who was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.
According to the man, the Tamale Teaching Hospital failed to provide critical support to his brother, Sumaila Amadu, who died during a dialysis session.
He disclosed that his brother, who was undergoing his scheduled dialysis at the hospital’s Renal Clinic on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, when a power outage occurred with his late brother having difficulty breathing.
The man further revealed that the hospital’s standby power plant wasn’t working and there was reportedly no oxygen available at the renal clinic at the time.
In a Facebook post on August 29, 2026, the young man wrote, “Circumstances That Led to the Death of My Brother, Sumaila Amadu, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH)
My brother, Sumaila Amadu, was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and required dialysis twice every week. Despite his condition, Sumaila remained strong and determined. Whenever he completed his dialysis sessions, he would regain his strength and continue with his normal activities. He accepted dialysis as part of his weekly routine, hoping and waiting for the opportunity for a kidney transplant.
On Tuesday, 25th August 2026, Sumaila went to the Renal Clinic at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) for his scheduled evening dialysis session.
At about 9:00 p.m., I called my brother to check on him. He told me that he had started his dialysis session.
I called again at approximately 10:20 p.m. He told me that he was still undergoing dialysis and that he would call me later.
At about 10:45 p.m., I called again. This time, I was informed by my friend, who had accompanied Sumaila to the dialysis centre, that there had been a power blackout and that Sumaila was having difficulty breathing.
I was further informed that the hospital’s standby power plant wasn’t working and there was reportedly no oxygen available at the renal clinic at the time.
My brother struggled to breathe during this critical period. Despite his efforts to survive, Sumaila eventually passed away. 💔
The circumstances surrounding his death have left our family devastated and deeply concerned. We cannot help but ask whether everything that could have been done to save his life was actually done.
A patient undergoing dialysis is already in a vulnerable medical condition. Reliable electricity, oxygen and emergency support can be matters of life and death.
We therefore believe that the circumstances surrounding Sumaila’s death deserve a thorough, transparent and independent investigation. Our family deserves to know exactly what happened during his final moments, what medical interventions were provided, whether oxygen was available, what caused the interruption during his dialysis, and whether the hospital’s emergency systems functioned as they should.
This is not only about Sumaila.
Today, it is my brother. Tomorrow, it could be someone else’s brother, sister, mother, father or child.
We are calling for answers, accountability and urgent action to ensure that no other patient loses their life because essential emergency support is unavailable when it is needed most.
May Allah forgive Sumaila Amadu, have mercy upon him and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.

Some Ghanaians reacting to the post stated, “The funding and donations TTH has received over the past couple of years can position them perfectly to invest in solar panels, which could cut their reliance on the national grid by about 50% during power outages. The key challenge lies in effective management and the presence of strong leaders who can drive the hospital’s vision forward”.
A Facebooker added, “Honestly, I strongly believe the only way to fix the continuous negligence at this particular TTH is to start holding those responsible legally accountable. We cannot continue losing people under questionable circumstances and simply move on as if nothing happened.
Whenever such incidents occur, instead of only preaching to the grieving families to accept everything as God’s will and be patient, we should also be encouraging and supporting them to seek justice. If negligence contributed to the loss of a loved one, the hospital and those responsible must be held accountable.
Enough is enough. Until there are serious consequences for negligence, I fear this may continue and more innocent lives could be lost. It is time we stopped normalising these incidents and started demanding accountability and justice for the victims and their families”.
A netizen added, “I could remember when the Health Minister suspended the C E O for the poor condition of the hospital, and our people were furious and insulting the Minister……. Don’t they have an internal fund that can repair or replace the power generator…May Allah have mercy on our brother”.
