Firefighters recover GH¢50,000, over US$5000 at Accra-Kumasi highway crash scene

Firefighters of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have announced that they have recovered GH¢50,000, US$5,231.81 and other valuables after a road crash at Suhum Niifio on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

In addition to the cash, firefighters recovered mobile phones, power banks, National ID cards and other personal belongings from the vehicles.

According to reports, the accident occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026, and involved a Ford F-150 and a Kia Rio.

One male occupant of the Kia was trapped inside the vehicle.

The GNFS detailed that a six-member crew from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station, led by STNO II Darkwah Prince, arrived at the scene at about 8:03 p.m. and used extrication equipment to rescue the trapped casualty.

They further disclosed that a victim has been subsequently transported to the Suhum Government Hospital for medical attention.

According to the GNFS Preliminary information, the Ford F-150 was overtaking when it collided with the rear of the Kia Rio, causing extensive damage to the Ford F-150 and partial damage to the Kia Rio, with no deaths recorded.

The GNFS attributed the crash to wrongful overtaking and called on motorists to exercise caution and strictly observe road safety regulations.

In other news, one person has died, and 14 others have sustained injuries in a road accident on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.

Reports suggest the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, and involved a MAN Diesel truck and a Toyota Hiace.

According to reports, the crash occurred on the Accra–Kumasi Highway near Paradise Restaurant at Bunso.

Preliminary reports indicate that the truck veered into the opposite lane while attempting to give way to a Toyota Vitz, leading to the collision.

Firefighters at the Bunso Fire Station disclosed that they received a distress call at about 7:30 p.m. and immediately deployed a six-member team, with the team reaching the location around 7:46 p.m.

According to an eyewitness, the MAN truck, with registration number AS 4765-11, was attempting to make way for a Toyota Vitz, which was allegedly overtaking improperly.

The eyewitness disclosed that the manoeuvre reportedly caused the truck to veer across the road, where it collided with the side of the Toyota Hiace ER 655-25.

The crash left the front portion of the truck partially damaged, with the Hiace sustaining damage along its side.

Reports disclosed that one female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while 14 other occupants sustained injuries.
