The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has said flooding in Accra is not solely an engineering challenge, calling for a united effort to address Ghana’s capital’s recurring flooding.

According to the Ga Mantse, Accra’s recurring flooding requires collective responsibility and sustained behavioural change.

The Ga Mantse further expressed concern over the destruction caused by the June 29 heavy rains, extending sympathies to affected persons and communities.

The statement further acknowledged the efforts of government institutions and emergency responders who are working to restore normalcy following the destruction caused by the floods.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 1, by the King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II and the Ga Traditional Council read, “The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, and the Ga Traditional Council have taken careful note of the persistent challenges posed by Accra’s perennial flooding, as well as the renewed efforts by Government, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, NADMO, Metropolitan Authorities, and the Security Services to address this issue with urgency, discipline, and foresight.”

“We extend our deepest sympathies to all families, traders, motorists, and communities affected by the recent rains. We also commend the dedication of public institutions, emergency responders, and citizens working tirelessly to safeguard lives and restore normalcy.”

“As custodians of the land, we emphasise that flooding in Accra is not solely an engineering challenge, but a matter that demands collective responsibility, adherence to land-use regulations, improved sanitation practices, environmental stewardship, and respect for natural waterways.”

Meanwhile, Nana Yaa Jantuah, a Presidential staffer at the Jubilee House, has said the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) should be blamed for the June 29 floods.

According to Nana Yaa Jantuah, GMet is responsible for informing Ghanaians about weather conditions but has failed to perform its duties.

She highlighted that GMet should have held press conferences and engaged the media to caution the public about impending rainfall and its potential impact.

Nana Yaa Jantuah highlighted that GMet should liaise with the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other relevant institutions to adequately prepare and minimise the impact of heavy rains.

Speaking on a panel discussion on UTV’s Adekye Nsroma on July 1, 2026, Nana Yaa Jantuah shifted the blame to GMet, saying, “For me, I blame GMet because it seems they are just in their corner doing their own thing. But you see, GMet is supposed to coordinate with NADMO, the Fire Service, Defence and everybody.

“They can even hold a press conference to caution people about the impact of an upcoming rainfall.

“They can also write a letter to the government to warn them about the impact and, when you do that, you minimise the level of destruction,” she said.

Nana Yaa Jantuah further argued that the GMet should not just announce rainfall but should also engage stakeholders to ensure adequate preparedness.

Her comments follow heavy rainfall on Monday, June 29, 2026, which claimed the lives of at least 12 people and destroyed several properties.
